The idea started when the founder couldn’t find the right shoes for himself, and so he started a website called Zappos. Zappos was initially a online shoe retailer but has later expanded into different things (like clothes, accessories etc.). They’ve become a household name as an online retailer and is one of the most popular spot for buying things online. Recently, they’ve been acquired by Amazon, which got them for a sky high $888 million…
… It’s one of the best news, following the economic recession, it gives hope to thousands or millions of startup or existing companies that the big companies are still acquiring. It was a good move by Amazons part to acquire their competitor. Deal aside, I admire Zappos company and is such an inspiration to millions out there. One thing that I find they have to improve on is their design, it somehow looks like the old websites (jump the web 2.0 movement).
What I really admire (reading the current issue of INC magazine) is the whole company culture which makes their people happy, and how their customer service is. It is just exceptional how they value customer service and how they improved their service beyond what’s needed. But what I really admire about them, is the way their CEO knows the value of a great domain name.

Before they started, Tony Hsieh bought the domain name Drugs.COM and parked it for revenues. During their time in Zappos, they bought Clothes.COM (for $4.9 Million) to expand into the clothing business. Only a few startups know about domain names, and even if they knew they wouldn’t invest because they find it expensive. If they only knew how much traffic they could get on both type-in traffic and SEO traffic. It might be expensive, but in the long run, you’ll get more than you’ve invested in it.
It’s a great move on their part, and with this acquisition, Amazon will surely grow even bigger and better (especially if they adapt to Zappos culture).
