But if you do have that extra capital in your hand, buying an established domain name or website in the after market could just work. Here’s why:

Instead of starting from scratch building the website up, it might be easier to acquire a working system that is fully developed. It sometimes take more time and money to build a website up rather than just buy it off someone else. You could then focus on making it better and increasing revenues.

There are websites / domain names that already have a steady flow of traffic or a community built around it, this means that all you have to do is maintain the traffic rather than build and get traffic in. Usually these websites / domain names are priced at 2 – 10 times the yearly revenues. The great thing is that you could get the money back and profit after a certain period (or less if you can optimize the website or add advertising revenues).

There are a lot of developers out there that are great in developing websites and poor at generating revenues (web 2.0 disease). So for them to profit or get their money back, they’d have to sell the whole website and domain name. What you need to do here, is to buy the website, do whatever changes (renovate) you can contribute. This could be like optimizing and increasing the advertisements, doing SEO, building better features or contents. And resell it to others at a higher price.
Eat the competition

It could be that the competition is battling for SEO or your audience, sometimes the best thing to do is to acquire them. You get a larger crowd to both your websites (and could become a network), as well as, increasing advertising revenues by being the dominant website for a certain topic or category. This is a good strategy for e-commerce to acquire the competitor for their keywords to get more sales thru the use of the other website to lead visitors.
