Why I invested heavily in .PH domain names
Domaining has always been interesting topic for me, it started for me as I was looking for domain names for my web 2.0 projects. I started investing in .COM and .NET which was a natural investment since it was the popular domain name extensions. But one day, my eyes were opened by the opportunity of ccTLDs and this is when I started to look for a suitable ccTLD for me. .PH domain name was one of my first choices…
… When I first looked at it, my reaction was like WTF, why would it cost 5 times the international’s price. And then I realized, it was because of the openings and opportunities it had that made it that highly priced. A lot of premium generic domain names are available, these are one dictionary word domain name. It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars or more to be able to get such extension in .COM, .NET or .ORG. I was able to acquire 3 characters one dictionary word domain names, which I believe is going to be of high values in the future.
Another thing that really got me into it, is the fact that I’m Filipino and naturally you invest on your own. I’m more familiar than my other foreign investor counterparts and I’m more likely be able to monetize it thru the local market than they could. The Philippine Web is just way too open, there’s not much web developments (aside from blogs) and it’s really open for anyone for the taking.
– .PH Domain Names is my way to tap our (around) 100 million population –
With my network in the local IT industry people and partnerships, I’m able to develop my domain names faster and bigger in scale. Able to set up a network of great sites for the Philippines. And lastly, there’s just no competition in the SEO space. A premium generic domain name can get traffic very easily, this is because most of its counterparts are owned by domainers who simply park their domain names and the local market haven’t really tackled the topic online. So a first page ranking in less than a few days of development is almost guaranteed.
Although .PH do cost way more, it’s worth investing in it as you are buying premium. In a few years time, when all the premium generic domain names are taken, dotPH might slash the price down to a normal .COM. But the opportunity is today and now, if you wait till a few years time, it will be just like the people saying that they’ve missed the opportunity in investing in .COM. It’s a risk but something that you have definite control over.
