Why domain name parking works for some and doesn’t work for the rest of us

why domain name parking worksEveryone argues that domain name parking is dead and that we all have to move on to developing our domain names. That’s really true and I absolutely agree, however it doesn’t always apply to everyone. Here’s why domain name parking works for some and why it doesn’t work for the rest of us…

… The whole concept behind domain name parking is to capitalize on type-in traffic, so the only traffic you can rely on is when people type YourDomainName.COM in their address bar. There’s no search engine traffic and is listed very very low in search engine results (sometimes it doesn’t even show).

So why does Domain Name Parking work for some people?

It is because with “billions” of people still getting a grip of the use of computers and internet, there are still those who type the domain name directly to their address bars. Domain Names like Food.COM, Car.COM etc., there domain names can get thousands of traffic simply thru Type-In. Secondly, most of them own the gTLD, which means they’re international and based on what I’ve seen with my stats, .COM (or gTLD in general)can earn you more money thru clicks than other domain name extensions. These are the reasons why these domain names sell for millions of dollars.

Why doesn’t domain name parking work for the rest of us?

Simply because we don’t have the domain names with high type-in traffic, we may have been able to get a lot of search engine traffic (thru SEO or Advertising) but it doesn’t compare to when visitors type it directly. We may get the occasional visits but it’s so occassional that it’s not even profitable.

What “usually” is required to get high type-in traffic is a one dictionary, highly popular keyword that is a gTLD to make it big in parking. It is then we’ll grow to love domain name parking companies, but if you own 2nd rate domain names or ccTLDs (just like I do) then we’d really need to compete thru development.

  1. I’m actually not convinced that only new users type in domain names directly in the address. In general type-in traffic seems to be fairly steady and I know of experienced users that will employ a combination of search engines and direct navigation.

Beginners often cannot tell the difference between an address bar and the search box and many users (not just beginners), who know the domain name of the site they are looking for, will still type it into a search engine.

  2. @Frank: Thanks for dropping by. True, its always been a combination however the domains that can really earn from type-in traffic are all taken. What we’re left with in the market are second rate domains, which can only compete with SEO which domain parking can’t provide.

  3. something said

its all about meta tags & getting your site known
just because you put a site up it doesn’t earn.
you have to build it and have the bots visit your page daily.
meaning having fresh content all the time.

just like i never heard of techfilipino
as it does not pop up on the searches much.
i always look up stuff in fil.
and just found it cause i was looking for something oddball.

maybe has fresh content randomly but doesn’t have what people are searching for.

  4. @something: Meta tags doesn’t seem to work, but you’re right it’s about being known and getting great SEO.

That’s right, I haven’t really targeted Fil as my keyword. But I’m getting there slowly, thanks for pointing that out.
