Today, A lot of companies focus on social media like Facebook and YouTube to raise awareness about their company. Only a few companies are taking advantage of domains to use for their online marketing campaigns. Little do these companies know that domains are a great tool that they can really exploit for their company’s gain…
… The Future of Online Marketing with domains will really fall under the Generic Keyword domains. This means that those domains like Watches.com or Outsource.com are going to be used by companies to promote and sell their products or services, just like how Toys.com was used by Toys ‘R’ Us as their way to market online.

It all comes down to SEO, just look at the age of Google today. You don’t hear people saying I looked it up in the Yellow Pages, but instead you’ll hear “I Googled it”. The point is that for us to be exposed in people’s eyes means we need to be on the first page of the search results for our particular brand, product or service. So how will domains going to be used in the future by companies? (aside from SEO which is obvious)
Future of Online Marketing with Domains
Minisites
Aside from their corporate domain, they’ll have multiple minisites. These minisites correspond to the products or service that they sell, for example GlassDoor.com. What you’ll find is that people search very specific terms, like Glass door, having a exact match can almost guarantee a first page result right away. There are many companies that do this already but its not that rampant still, and generic keywords are still floating in the aftermarket which no end users or companies taking notice.
Community Sites
Certain domains will be used as a community site where people can talk and discuss about certain products or services. So in the case of Glass door, this could be used by the company to setup a forum where they can interact with their potential / current customers about glass doors. It generates the leads that they need and doesn’t cost them as much as advertising but is very effective as it is direct marketing.
Press Release (PR) Sites
I’m not referring to Google PageRank, but Public Relations is the term I’m after. This can be used by companies to spin off a negative PR or release their own press releases. If there were negative press releases against them, they could use the domain dominate the negative release (thru SEO) and have a chance to explain or spin it around. It could also be used as a company blog to discuss about their product and service, and target the people who are searching for this information (Talk about good leads). After all, PR is a very powerful tool and can be more effective than just advertising.
Close off Competitors
Who wants competitors? By using multiple domains and out SEO-ing your competitors, you literally could get their search results ranking down. By just dominating the top 3 to 5 slots of the results, you could almost guarantee more that a huge number of traffic searching that terms will fall under your company.
