What The Trend: What and Why is this Twitter Trend (keyword) hot right now?

whatthetrendlogo What The Trend: What and Why is this Twitter Trend (keyword) hot right now? There has been a lot of Twitter 3rd party applications and websites that have sprung up when twitter opened its API. However, not all of them you would even think about using as a Twitter user. TechCrunch recently covered (here) a very interesting application that will be really useful for individuals and companies using Twitter. What the Trend is a brand new Twitter Application that explains why certain words are hot in Twitter right now. What’s great about it…

… is that it is actually useful for us Twitter users to find out why such topics are hot, most applications just gives you the keywords that doesn’t really make sense to most of us. Take for example the keyword tink, the explanation was that a famous member of the boy band new kids on the block, Jordan Knight, Twits using the tink Twitter name.

It also shows the hottest topics right now in Twitter and the explanations. The interface is also very simple and could still be improved (they’ve opened their API, so big opportunity for developers), but it does give you a straight forward answer of what you’re looking for which is (hot trends in twitter). It would be nice to see a search function integrated to it, to have backdated trends to be search-able or to find the ones that are popular but still on the bottom of the list. I’d also love to see some charts to show a more descriptive view of the situation. The best thing is when you do click a certain trend it gives you a more detailed explanation.

The explanation is more detailed than just Twits, it gives recent Twits, website news and Photos that are tagged with the keyword. It really gives a much better explanation than just short 140 character Twits. Overall, the concept is just brilliant, it’s so simple yet so useful to all of us Twitter users. Applications should be about doing useful things that users can really appreciate, and this application does this best. However, improvements are still needed as a competitor with a much better interface could spring up and get their share away from them (the market’s still open). I hope to see it improved in the future and hopefully this will be the search that Twitter will be officially integrating.
