Being a buyer of domains, I’ve noticed how harder and harder it is to find an appropriate domain name for my website ideas. Most 2 – 3 – 4 letter words are already taken, not to mention catch phrases. Web 2.0 names are easier to find (using unconventional combination of words), but is harder to relate to the web project. As I struggled coming up with domain names, I started to look for online tools that could help me generate catchy yet somehow short and easier to remember domain names. I’ll be categorizing domain name tools by whether you have a website domain name idea or not. These are the tools that I found:
Â
Web 2.0 – 3.0 Domain Name Generators:
No idea / knowledge on what domain name to register:
Dotomator.com has 2 types of tools available for domain name generator, one is the prefix – suffix combination and the other is the web 2.0 name generator. Their Prefix-Suffix combination gives you a choice to add your own words to combine or to choose from pre-made names (such as colors, friends etc.), it gives you all the possibilities of combining the words together. You choose your desired domain names and it checks it through the domain registrar from Dotster.com (it checks the availability on their site). Their Web 2.0 name generator works in a different way, it will just keep on generating web 2.0 domain suggestions without the input of the user. So just keep clicking generate and it will keep on throwing out web 2.0 domain names. What’s great about this tool is that it gives you suggestions if you really have no idea on what domain names you want.
Â
NameThis.com is a crowd generated domain naming tool, it uses the wisdom of the crowd to generate the domain name that you want. This is however a premium type service, it costs $99 for the crowd to come up with 3 unique domain names for your website. It works by having the user place as much information as possible on what domain name they would like, and then the crowd gives numerous suggestions in 48 hours. The user then votes for his or her favorite and the top 3 winners split the money. What’s great about this is that input of different people will help generate a great and relevant domain names in no time.

Â
Hackslash.net has a webpage wherein it generates really random set of web 2.0 domain names. It’s more of a domain name generator as opposed to available domain name generator as it generates taken domain names on its lists. What’s great about it is the clever placing of numbers in the domain, which gives us domain name buyers a chance to see how certain numbers could be inserted to our domain names.

Suggest.name is very very similar to Dotomator.com, its a prefix-suffix combination domain name generator. Some noticeable differences are the cleaner User Interface and more generated keywords are provided. It even has the same domain name registrar that is checks the domains with (Dotster.com).

You have an idea on what domain name to register
Domize.com has got a different way to generate domain, I believe this is quite a unique way of solving it. What it does is that it lets you type in the domain name that you want, but instead of giving you just random sets of domain names or unique combinations, it gives you different availabilities of domain names spelling (for example for techfilipino it gave me results for tec, tech, techf, techfi, techfil and so on). What’s great about it is that it will give you an idea straight away if it is taken, and whether you could change a letter or 2 to get a name similar to what you want (example, signal / zignal).
Â
Nameboy.com has a very simple user interface, it is a prefix-suffix type of generator (primary secondary keyword). It then comes up with domain names (both available and unavailable) and comes up with relevant keywords to substitute the words to make similar domain names. When I tried searching it gave me a whopping 10 pages of domain search results, it’s great that its given me with web 2.0′ish domain names with some just straight forward domains.
Â
Â
MakeWords.com is one of the most powerful tool when it comes to domain name generators. It allows you to search by different categories (Name Generator, Themes, Dictionary, Randomizer, Phrases, Spinner, Blender ), and gives corresponding search results by different languages and according to the category. It gives both available and unavailable domain names, it also allows you to register with numerous domain name registrars available. This tool is based on language and does pretty well when searching for good domain names.
Â
Who.is also provides a domain name generator tool, aside from the whois search function. It allows you to add 5 combination keywords and generates related keywords and is filtered by the user’s specification (how related, length of domain, etc.). It gives you related keyword availabilities and shows the percentage of ‘relatedness’ to the original keyword. What’s great about it is that you could do 5 combination keywords at one search, unlike most websites that allow only one.

Â
BustaName.com is one of the most comprehensive domain name generator that I’ve ever used. I’ve profiled it before here. It lets you add keywords to the list and gives you options whether you want it combined with other keywords, add prefix or suffix, hyphens, plurals and dropping the last vowel. It also comes equipped with a thesaurus, which generates all related keywords and allowing the user to add it to the keyword search list. It tied up with several domain registrars to give you the best possible price. It also has a quick whois search on the top bar. It does, however, have bugs, there are times where unavailable domains would come out available and when trying to register thru domain registrars, will come out as unavailable. This tool has given me allowed me to find a lot of great domain names available.
