Twitter: Ways they could Monetize (Profit)

There has been a lot of buzz lately about how Twitter is going to monetize, there have been a lot of speculations and even jokes on how this could be done. There are several ways they could do it…

They’ve recently opened up their API which was a really good move, as it will attract more users and even increase time spent by users in Twitter. I’ve started thinking how could Twitter possibly monetize without (too much) losing members, and here’s what I came up with:

1. Giving Paid Seals of Approval to those applications in their API, just like how Facebook did it.
   • Giving approval to Developers that pass their criteria, where the developer pays a certain fee.
2. Allow Payment for users to have followers
   • Some companies might be interested to get followers in a certain area, and Twitter could start to send follow suggestions to users who is “in” the target of the company. The amount of people who joins will be multiplied by the amount agreed per follower which is the total revenue.
3. Tweet blast to people in the local area for local advertisers
   • Similar to text (SMS) blast, but instead of adding several followers, an Official Twitter account will be used to Tweet people who fit their target.
4. Show relevant advertisements like Contextual Advertisements or Affiliate Marketing after a Tweet
   • Every Tweet has a keyword attached to it, and right after Tweeting, a relevant advert could show up just below the last update area in the Twitter homepage.
5. Possibly expand to Twitter for companies.
   • A more private Twitter for companies’ internal networks, a paid version paying $x amount per month per employee.

These are my initial ideas right now, I believe the potential of Twitter becoming one of the big players (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo …) is quite evident. Whether or not it is bought by a larger corporation or stands alone doesn’t make a difference, as their concept is really strong and has shown a great track record especially in the field of reporting. It’s just a matter of time before it becomes big, but the possibility is limitless.
