For most resource websites (wiki / knowledge based) or blogs, What’s great is to have interaction with your visitors. For most it’s by having a comment section on the bottom of the screen, but what’s noticeable is that most visitors don’t get to see it and only a small amount do check out the comment section. What I did find is a website called Tucent which seems to have made a great difference in this area. In a nutshell, it allows commenting on any part of the text written. What I like about it…
… is that it’s a non-intrusive solution that allows you to comment on text. it’s the same as the lightbox (pop-up image but contained within the same browser) that doesn’t darken the background. What’s also great is that the installation is just by adding a script (code) in your HTML and it works like a charm. What’s also nice is that you’re allowed to control which areas visitors can and cannot comment.
It’s totally free for websites that hit less than 5000 visitors a month, however, if you do exceed the limit then the monthly fee is 2.50 Euros. The count is done by Tucent’s plug-in, so if you exceed the limit on free version then tucent becomes inactive. What’s great about it though is that it doesn’t have the advertisements even when using free. Here’s a video example:
Overall, I love the concept. The comments doesn’t bother visitors so much and integrates it with the text quite nicely. This concept has a great potential as I could see a lot of things being able to be integrated with it and with its simple installation, a lot of people are going to be able to use it. It might be nice to have a enable / disable button so people who opt not to see comments will see no comments. It would be nice to integrate it with other websites like Facebook, where tagging of certain images (linked to their facebook account) and videos could be integrated together using the Developer API. I’m looking forward for a more advanced version soon.
