At this point in time, Great Domain names are very rare. Whether it is for your own web 2.0 startup, company, or investing in Domain names, there are certain things to look for before you go on and register domain names. You’ll notice that more than half of what you search for is already registered, either it does have contents or for sale. But there might still be a ‘few’ domain names out there that could fit your needs and would cost the normal registration fee. So, Here are some tips in searching for domain names:
– Is it Trademarked? –
Tip 1: Most important is to check whether the domain name is trademarked. It would be really nice to own shell.com (for example), however with new rules, this can be contested and given to the trademark owner for registering their trademark name. With the new rule (aka Snowe Bill), the domain name owner doesn’t need to be informed about the infringement and the domain name would be seized and given to the trademark owner.
– What extention? –
Tip 2: Get the right extention. .COM’s are the most preferred extention in the domain name market, getting .BIZ, .INFO or other Global Top Level Domains (GTLD) or Country Code Top Level Domain (CCTLD) might not be familiar to a lot of regular users and has a lower resale value.
– Less Characters equals more value –
Tip 3: Less is more. When registering domain names, the less the characters are the better it is. It means less percent in error in typing the domain name and having a shorter domain name looks better and professional.
– It’s t-e-c-h-f-i-l-i-p-i-n-o.com, do I need to repeat that again? –
Tip 4: Can you remember, spell and pronounce it? If you were to tell someone over the phone to visit your website, would you be able to pronounce it? Would the listener be able to spell it right and remember it for later input?
– Gogle.com vs Google.com –
Tip 5: This then lower the values of misspelled, typo and ‘not dictionary word’ domain names in the reselling market. It also is hard to relay and therefore could stop the person your communicating with from visiting your website.
– Avoid numbers and dashes –
Tip 6: Best not to have numbers or Hyphens. Imagine if I was to tell you to visit my website at tech7623.com, most of them would remember tech but would have a big chance of forgetting the 7623 part. Hyphens and numbers gives less resale value and looks unprofessional especially to domain names for companies.
– Your own brand of website –
Tip 7: If you are building a brand out of your domain name (meaning advertising and promoting the domain name), then there are exceptions to the tips above, but following it would be very beneficial in building a brand.
– Monetizing a domain name –
Tip 8: If you are wanting to monetize your domain name, go for more keyword rich and you probably could disregard tips 3 and 4.
