The more spam the better my minisites are

It’s annoying (at times) to keep checking and deleting them as it all piles up (as you do want to check if a person’s comment does appear in there, which has happened a couple of times). But for my minisites, I feel more comfortable if lots of spam appear in my unapproved comment list, here’s why…

… The main reason that I find spam good in my minisites is that it means that my minisite is already being indexed by major search engines and is being picked up by spam robots as it scours the web for places to spam. These are the crappy spams that appear in your comment box that says something really ridiculous.

Normally what happens is that I’d submit my minisites to all major search engines, it then takes a few days before I do get spams in my comments. When that happens, it takes a few days then traffic starts coming in. And another thing I noticed is that the higher the number of spam the higher the number of visitors that do come in. Now, I’m not saying that spam is good, what I mean here is that it could be used to see how well your minisite’s doing.

Wordpress’ Akismet does a great job in filtering these types of spam and there’s really not much work to do, Just press delete all spam and it all goes away. But still be careful as there are times ‘real’ user comments do go there and could be deleted. So next time before you get pissed about those spams in your minisite, it just means that search engines are already ranking you nicely in their search results.
