For a lot of us website owners, one of the quickest way to earn money from our websites is by adding Pay Per Click (PPC) ads in our websites. But not everyone’s successful from this, some would say it’s their lowest monetization technique (a few cents). Here are some reasons why PPC earnings are low…
… PPC earnings used to be a huge goldmine that a lot of expert in internet marketing taken advantage of, but their time is almost over. PPC earnings have declined over the past few years and people are looking for other ways like Affiliate Marketing to really make money, here’s why:

Here’s why PPC earnings are low:
Ads are Placed closely to be accidentally clicked
It has to be placed in areas where visitors are likely to be browsing and accidentally clicked to increase our CTR. This is why it is said that you have to place the ads as close to the content (wrapped) as possible. We’re relying more on Accidents than actual interested clicks.
Ads are Uncontrollable
PPC is very uncontrollable, you wouldn’t know what will come out in the ads. Yes, you could go and filter each and every one of your ads, but the time spent is really not worth it. You simply don’t know what your website will be promoting.
Can distract users from content
Users go to your website because of the content that you provide them, they’d like to learn and read more on what you have to say about something. PPC ads could be distracting as it is placed within the content and it drives the traffic away from your website (with a small compensation).
Invalid clicks
There would be days that you won’t believe your eyes when you get a lot of clicks, just to find that you’ve only earned a few cents. This is because PPC providers do have “invalid clicks” categories and the worse is that they don’t give an explanation about it. This could even lead to your website being black listed without proper explanation. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a reason for why it was invalid, like for example “there was an IP that clicked your ads 4 times in a row”.
Users know
Because we rely more on accidental clicks than anything else, we must assume that the users don’t know that these are ads that they click on (majority). But the PPC era has come pass, users know which are ads and which are not, and as they know more, the less they click and the less you earn.
Now, I’m not saying everyone is unsuccessful in their PPC monetization strategy (as a matter of fact you’ll find a lot of successful PPC earners), but based on the majority of what I see, hear and people I talk to tell me that PPC isn’t and shouldn’t be a website’s only way to monetize. This article is based on my own experiences, as my PPC earnings have gone up and down since I started with my PPC strategy 2 years ago till today. I’m hoping to switch to Affiliate Marketing very soon.

PPC isn’t that great for a successful website. But for a website that’s starting out, it’s a great way to start as it’s so easy to implement and manage. It also forms a baseline that you can use to compare earnings from affiliate marketing.
@Jeff: Thanks for dropping by. That’s true, although if you know how to play around, PPC can really give a decent earnings. There are a lot of people I know who’s making a killing out of it. But you’re right nothing beats Affiliate Marketing, it’s the top of the food chain
