Don’t you find yourself one day, being a web developer, that it takes longer than expected to develop a website? Well that’s what I found I have a problem with, I keep finding ways which I believe could make the website better. It has been causing great delays for my projects and it has not really been well to my business…
… Some websites that I estimated could be done a month or two has become 3 or more months. Just like how my minisites took 2 – 3 weeks to develop before, which could’ve just taken me a day or two. I felt at that time that I was making progress, but I really have missed out a lot on other things.
– Simplicity is the key to less delays –
Simplicity is good, and that’s what I’ve left out of my formula. I should’ve started to think about what’s vital or crucial for the website concept to work and focused on that than thinking of more complicated features that could add value. One of the best examples that I’ve really learned from is CraigsList, if you check out the website what do you see? Plain Basic and simple text and lists. Is it beautiful? No, but it is simple and users love it because of that. People didn’t need it too designed, they just needed the basic feature of being able to post on the classified ads website. When I developed my websites I always wanted a forum, internal messaging, pretty much what you’d need to make it more social. Did that help? Hell no, it got me behind (way behind) working on those elements, which really got me thinking today on why the hell would I add those if it doesn’t seem to be needed by the concept.
This is the mentality that I’m adopting right now, its no point developing a website that will be released really late and nobody appreciates anymore than having a website that is simple and basic but everyone needs right now. I’ve learned this lesson the expensive way and I’m really moving towards simplicity.
