Philippines web 2.0 development mistakes I encountered – Keep it Simple Stupid

Philippines web 20 development mistakes Philippines web 2.0 development mistakes I encountered Keep it Simple StupidI’m not so sure how many people know about the saying KISS, which means Keep It Simple Stupid. I had to learn it the hard way, 2009 has taught me just that, my biggest mistake in 2009 with my Philippines web 2.0 development was that I was trying to build websites that are way too complicated. I should’ve kept it simple

… In my pursuit of the web 2.0 business, I always thought that my website has to be able to do this and that, until it gets so complicated that you kind of forget what the hell the website is all about. It should be more basic, more simple and let users be your guide.

Philippines is still lagging in technology, more often than not, many are still basic users which use the web mainly for checking their emails and check the social networking websites. Yet here I was, trying to make a solution for problems that they have yet to see or realize (although is a need for other countries). So this year, I’d still be focusing on developing the Philippines internet space, but the main difference is that instead of making it more complicated, I’ll be making it more simple but in volume. What we need right now is to fill the most basic needs of our internet users, something that could help their businesses and personal needs. Forget making digg / facebook / ebay etc ideas, focus on your original and really simple concept where you could grow and develop that into a big website that can be a household name.

It took me a year to realize my mistakes and although it may sound like a long time, it was a good wake up call for me and has pointed me to the right direction. The problem I really had coming into this industry is that we  at some point and that point can really get us nowhere to the point of quitting the industry. I’m glad I had finally found my path and this 2010, that’s where my focus will be for my company and the best thing about it is that its simpler than what I was doing.
