One of my first questions when I started domaining is ‘where do I find good domain name investments?‘, there are so many avenues out there, there’s hand registration, aftermarket and dropping (expiring from non-renewal). Like most people when I started, I’ve always went with hand registration since it was less time consuming, according to my needs and basically costed me less money than the rest. But is there really opportunities still in hand registration?…
… The best thing about domain name investing is that there’s always opportunities, its just a question of where you look. You could use more money and buy yourself great domain names or you could use more time to scour a good domain name available for hand registration.
– Looking beyond 2 words domain names –
The problem is that people are looking for domain names that are around 1 to 2 words max, but most of them get really disappointed when they find not much is available. The opportunity I’m talking about is around 2 or more words, some might look very ugly and isn’t easy to remember but they’re searched a lot. You need to tap on these opportunities, take for example one of my minisites, PropertiesOfMetals.COM, I wouldn’t register such name that even has the word ‘of’, but since it is very highly searched and remains untapped its been getting great traffic ever since it started.
It was very tough to understand why certain domain names made money, but my lesson learned is that SEO is the man. It’s about pleasing the Search engines, as well as, your visitors to attract and retain more people to your website. So when you do go and find yourself a domain name investment, I suggest to take some time to understand and have a feel of what domainers talk about before you even get that first domain name investment. It’s best to learn from our mistakes than to go in that direction again.
