Nokia E71: My Netbook? Cellphone

nokia 300x300 Nokia E71: My Netbook? CellphoneToday, I had the time to really play around my cellphone, Nokia E71. It was something that I’ve used for almost a year and haven’t really touched much of the stuff other than sending texts or making phone calls. It was then that I realized that Cellphones or Mobile phones are moving fast that it can do almost everything my laptop can do.

Nokia E71 was one of Nokia’s premier business phones, it features a full Qwerty keyboard, Wifi and a high quality QVGA display. What I really like about my Nokia E71 is the applications and themes that it allows me to download (thru Ovi) and install on my phone.

Having spent a day playing around with it, I realized there are so many things I could do with it. For example, VOIP. There are applications like Skype and NimBuzz, which could allow me to chat and speak (thru a call) to people for free. What’s even more shocking is the browsers that allows it to function just like a laptop. I have the default Nokia browser, SkyFire and Opera, all of which allows me to watch YouTube videos, browse the web, access javascripts which is exactly what my computer browser does.

One thing that I found interesting is that even if I browse the web with my phone, I don’t end up going to a .Mobi website. I would always go and access full page websites and Search Engines pretty much works the same for local area. This is one of the reason why I believe .Mobi isn’t really going to pickup, it’s more expensive than .COM or .NET and it just doesn’t seem to get much love from Browsers.

Going back to my E71, I realized that if my phone can do so much, what else will the next generation be? All I can say is that, a netbook might not be able to cut it soon as my phone can do much much more.

More and more companies are using the .mobi domain because they know that a smartphone — no matter how smart — is still a smaller size than a desktop. Plus, the context of how, why and when people are using smartphones to access content is different from how, why and when they’re using the Web from a desktop.

You can see a list of just a few companies and brands who are using the .mobi domain at http://dotmobi.mobi/content/mobi-users. And you can see five reasons why those brands are using the .mobi domain at http://dotmobi.mobi/resource/top-5-reasons-why-you-need-a-mobi-name.

Also, the .mobi domain — pricewise — is generally the same as .com and .net domains; however, prices are set by individual registrars. If price is an issue, registrar Gandi is giving away .mobi domain names as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations. You just need to create a new Gandi account to get a free .mobi domain name at https://ten.gandi.net/. This give-away will be available between March 1, 2009, at 2:00 PM (GMT) and March 11, 2009, at 1:59 PM.
