As I’ve been developing all my minisites in WordPress, I’ve always heard about WordPress MU which is supposed to give me an easier time updating multiple blogs / websites. What I always do is I install a new wordpress for each of my site which really takes time. So I decided to give WordPress MU a try, here’s my experience testing it out…
… The advantage of WordPress MU is that it allows you to have multiple blog sites with a click and no need of going to your cpanel to change anything. It also allows owners to update all their blogs under one dashboard and no need to jump from one blog to another.
– WordPress MU only works for Sub Domains –
I was really excited to what it can do and I thought that it was going to be able to reduce my setup time and allow me to focus on content. But then came the downside, it only works for SubDomains and can’t do multiple domains. It was frustrating as I really thought that it would make my life really easy. So I decided to remove it and moved on with the next concept. So I decided to give Jobberbase a try, and I’ve been quite impressed by what it can do (I’ll be writing more about this later).
Although WordPress MU didn’t workout for me, it doesn’t mean that it’s useless. There are other ways I believe someone can make money from it. You could use it to allow users to create their own blogs (somehow similar to WordPress.com or Blogger.com) as it allows them to have their own blogs. Not only that, you could also use it for those premium generic domains and create killer subdomains, like luxury.watch.com or black.dress.com, which will surely be loved by Search engines.
I believe WordPress MU is useful for others for different business model but not for me. It’s something I would be considering to use for some of my projects.

I guess you missed the Domain Mapping plugin, which allows for full domains for the sub-blogs on MU.
It’s a shame, becasue I think you barely scratched the surface of what it does. My blog (linked to me name) is actually a sub-blog on a WPMU install.
Andrea_R: I’ve been trying to look for that in WordPress MU support but never actually saw that plugin. Thanks for letting me know, and I’ll try to give it another go.
WP MU is going to be merged with WP eventually I think is the plan and its a few versions behind WP and oh not everything works with it. Anyway good luck getting most regular WP plugins to work with it.
@Andre: Yes that’s what I heard, the merging sounds nice but you’re right, it’s all about the plugins which they should get it to work once they merge both.
