Just like any website or minisite owner, traffic is definitely one of the most important things that we need to consider. Minisites are built to take advantage of search engine traffic which is by having keyword rich domain names. But what I realized is that to get significant traffic, you’d need domain names that are very specific…
… We always hear the big names being sold, they’re highly searched, one dictionary word domains. It’s like Candy.COM, which were sold before for a whopping $3 million. But that’s not the type of domains that will make it big in minisites, it is the more specific ones that will make it.
One of the biggest mistake I believed I made is that I’ve invested in short one dictionary word domains that I developed into minisites. The problem I encountered is that the topic is too vague that you don’t really know what to write about when you put it up as a minisite. Take for example my minisite Fix.PH, I loved the fact that it is a 3 letter dictionary word domain but it is so vague that there’s simply not much you can write about. Also you never see people searching just for the word “fix”, they’ll be going for fix computer or fix computer etc.
What really pays is the more specific domains, just like when I got myself PropertiesOfMetals.COM which was so specific on the different properties of metals. It was very easy to write about and that it gets traffic very easily as it ranked number one for the keyword properties of metals with 5500 exact searches monthly. I’ve noticed the traffic here started to increase compared to when I had something vague.
Values for the short one word domains are, of course, higher than the longer ones and could sell really high. But as for a ‘minisite‘, it can get really difficult and traffic might not grow as fast.
