When buying or investing in domain names, it’s important to understand and be able to know what types of domain names that exist in the market. Domainers use quite a bit of abbreviations and terms for domain names that not everyone understands. So here are the explanations of the different types of domain names:
Top Level Domain Names (TLD)
– What is a TLD? –
Top Level Domain Names are domain names that are used worldwide. It comprises of different domain name extentions which are:
They’re usually quite the most sought after domain names in the world, their values are also usually higher than ccTLDs. Their registration fees are also usually cheaper than ccTLDs (.COM @ $7.49 / year and .PH @ $35 / year) .COM is the most popular and is the highest valued domain name in the world. However, because of this popularity most of the good TLDs are taken and is quite hard to find a good domain name investment.
Country-Code Top Level Domain Names (ccTLD)
– ccTLDs are the future –
ccTLD are domain names that are specifically assigned to different countries. These domain names have a suffix that refer to which country it was from (e.g. .PH is Philippines). There are quite a number of ccTLDs that exist right now, the most popular one is .CO.UK. Other popular ones are .US (United States), .IN (India), .CN (China). These type of domain names can be used as a type of domain name hack, where they form a word with the suffix (e.g. Gra.PH). These are great domain names as they get great Search Engine Optimization (SEO) points from local search engines (Try typing google.com and you’re redirected to the local version). The future of domain name investment is here as a huge number of premium domain names are up for grabs at a regular registration cost. I’ve written about it before here.
Premium Domain Names
– Premium domain names are like Gold –
Premium Domain Names are domain names that is composed of a 1 dictionary word domain name. These domain names are the most sought after as it gets organic traffic thru it’s domain name getting indexed quickly (Search Engine Optimization) and given more points than other websites. Unfortunately, most of it are already taken (except certain ccTLD premium domain names are still available). They’re usually found in the domain name aftermarket where they’re sold at a very high price. An Example is Candy.com which recently sold for $3 million dollars to a company that wants to start their own candy business.
GeoDomain Names
– Which place would you invest in?
Â
GeoDomain Names are domain names that refer to specific locations or areas in the world. These domain names are named after countries, states, cities, provinces and popular places. Contents of this type of domain names usually refer to activities or locations in the area. They’re also very highly priced, getting thousands, if not millions, of visitors in a day and has a higher Click Through Rate (CTR) than other types of domain names. This is because it is very relevant to the area and is of interest to the visitor. It also attracts many local advertisers as it gets a lot of relevant traffic. These type of domain names are mostly taken, and is also sold at a very high price, almost similar to a Premium Domain Names in value. An example is Chicago.com or ChicagoHotels.com, which attracts millions of users in a day. I’ve written about it before here.
Generic Domain Names
– It’s so common that you search it a lot –
Generic Domain Names are domain names that keyword rich, which means that these are popular keywords that are put together to form a word that is commonly searched for in search engines. This is great for SEO, as the domain names are very specific to search terms. With that said, it gets lots of traffic and therefore high in revenues as well. However, it’s not the best to be a company domain name, as it usually is quite long and isn’t always easy to remember (when said). The value of this type of domain names are usually from $XX to around $XXXX, depending on the hotness of the keywords. An example is DellComputers.com.
Brandable Domain Names
– Google and Yahoo are classified here –
Brandable Domain Names are domain names that are usually a name that refers to the company or a typo / misspelled word. The advantage of this is that it can usually be shorter than a generic domain name which can be easily said and remembered (but maybe not on spelling). It is also usually readily available for normal domain name registration (paying only around $7.49 / year for a .COM in GoDaddy). However, it isn’t the most search engine friendly and effort must be exerted to gain SEO of the domain name. The value of this domain names are usually quite low and doesn’t attract as much investors (they’d rather come up with their own names), but if aged and worked on SEO, it could command a good sum of money. An Example is Google.com or Yahoo.com.
Expired / Expiring Domain Names
– Don’t forget to renew your domain names –
Expired / Expiring Domain names are domain names that have been registered but wasn’t renewed by the owner. It is then pending to be deleted and should be available for normal registration soon. However, there’s such a thing as back-ordering where anyone could pay a fee and backorder a domain name to be the first one to buy once it expires. If there are two or more backorders then a bidding occurs, highest bidder gets the domain name. These type of domain names are great as it usually has been SEO’d and some even has traffic or links coming into the domain name. Expiring domain names can be any of the above mentioned types of domain names. I’ve written about it before here.
