One of the best tips given by the expert domainers is not to fall in love with your domain names, that’s like the number 1 rule for the don’ts of domaining. So why’d did I say love your domain names? I’m not just a domainer, which buys and sells domain names, but also a developer…
… The thing about domainers is that if you fall in love it will be hard to sell and then you’re burning cash as there’s no way for you to make money out of it. If domainers weren’t able to sell then they’ll lose money thru low revenues with parking and won’t be enough to cover renewal costs. So if it doesn’t earn money thru parking or selling then it’s good for nothing right?
But as a developer, you’re thinking this domain name is my life, creation and my brand. You have to fall in love with your domain name to make it, you’d have to commit and really dedicate your time and money into making that domain name into a full blown website that has a good revenue stream. A project could take months or years to finish, patience, self-motivation and love for the project will really make it successful.
This was one of my problems when I started domaining, I fell in love with my domain names and tried to detach myself. But what websites were I developing? It was a short term quick fix and wasn’t really what people wanted. And now I’m trying to get back in the falling in love stage and get serious in developing.
So what I’m doing now is to focus on building my portfolio into minisites first, while my teams are building up web 2.0 domain names. I’m really very excited as my minisites are acting as my marketing for the web 2.0 projects that I always wanted to do and own. I’m very happy that I was able to get the best of both worlds, domaining and developing just gives me a good leverage over other website startups. My advice fall in love with the domain names that you develop and be a domainer to the rest that you have no plans of developing and relying on parking for revenues.

Hi
I totally agree, I have been a domainer hopeful for 10 years and still unsuccessful living wage garnerer online.. I managed to save a couple of gems lang; but, my problem was I kept trying to re-invent myself and didn’t love my own domains enough to appreciate keeping site building on them for the long-term.. I kept wanting to grab something new, some new instant domain hope.. Time went by.. I still go domain fishing, though I think we must appreciate the few best ones we got enough, I agree, to dedicate our time – the problem was which ones? This took me alot of thinking recently and finally I realize I must spend close to 50% of my web time on my deemed best project.. But if you aren’t sure what that is, you definitely don’t want to waste your time digging for a well in a place where there is no water underneath.
Goodluck to you
Have a Special Day,
Yelo
@Yelo: That’s great to hear that there’s more filipino domainers. That’s true, the time spent in them is just crazy so you’ve got to learn to love it, otherwise the domain name would be underdeveloped and not going to generate decent revenues.
@Yelo:
Thanks for sharing, I also experience this. The good things are we learn in every mistake and it makes us wiser.
