LogMeIn: Remotely Access your Files from your Computer

logmeinlogo LogMeIn: Remotely Access your Files from your ComputerI’ve been using this service for almost a year now and I believe they deserve this post. I have a laptop, as well as, a desktop at home and one thing that I need at times is needing to set something up at home or grab a file to my laptop when I’m not at home. I then came across LogMeIn, which allowed me to remotely access my files from my other computer. What’s so great about it…

… was that I was able to access my desktop without being at home or even needing someone to do it for me. What’s even better is that I was able to access it as if it was from my other computer. I could control anything as if I was there using my home computer. I’ve tried to find so many applications that did this but none were as good as theirs.

LogMeIn Free is totally free but is limited to the remote control feature, which just allows you to control your remote desktop control. Once you register, you then set a username and password to your account and then also set a username and account for your desktop (which you want to access). I’ve been quite happy with the security that they’re providing and haven’t encountered any bad experiences while using it. You also need to install the application to the computer that you want to control remotely, which takes only a few minutes.

All you have to do to access your other desktop is to open a browser, login to their website and access your desktop thru your browser as if you were there. I was so amazed to control my desktop from so far away. I was also able to use it as a prank to the user who was using my desktop, by suddenly controlling the screen (lol) and getting them in panic mode of hackers hacking the computer. What I really like is the drag and drop feature which just allows me to drag files from my computer to the browser and it copies on my other computer. Note: The speed of which the screen refreshes is dependent on your internet connection, so with slower speed you’ll notice lags from your browser.

LogMeIn also has a Professional version (PRO) which has more features like Mini-Meetings, File Manager, File Sharing. Mini-meetings are great for sharing one desktop with other people you want to meet with. And File Manager and sharing are there for you to sync your 2 computers. It costs $69.95 per year or $12.95 per month.

Overall, I love what LogMeIn has done and it has helped me a lot for a year. It had made me feel like my desktop was right inside my laptop. It could be a good idea for businesses to take advantage of this, especially with the H1N1 scare, people could work anywhere but have the same amount of interaction. I have no complaints about their service and would like to thank them for a product well done.

A far more affordable solution for this sort of thing is Techinline (http://www.techinline.com). LogMeIn is a great tool, but the prices are just “through the roof”

RHUB (http://www.rhubcom.com) is a viable option, too. It’s not free, but the one-time purchase price for the web appliance is recovered within 3-10 months, depending on how you use it.

Thanks for the helpful information on LogMeIn. There are so many options for remote control software. Proxy Networks http://www.proxynetworks.com might be another one to check out particularly as a corporate solution. For a comparison of many of the different programs available, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_remote_desktop_software.
