How to stop Google 2 step verification from sending SMS or Voice call for every login

I’ve recently applied Google 2 step verification which makes my Google account more secure. This technology is similar to what banks use for logging into their system, by logging in with your password and then entering a code from an SMS / Voice call / a pin code via y0ur phone from Google. The only thing that I hated was the fact that they kept sending SMS to me everytime I logged in as I clear all my cookies when I logout.
I went all around the web and didn’t really find an answer as to why it kept sending me messages. I also have installed Google Authenticator on my phone, hoping that it would stop sending SMS but didn’t work as well. Also the verification codes were all wrong and I had to wait for the SMS everytime. The good thing is that I found the answer to this, I actually have made a mistake with my initial setup (by the way, you’ll need either an Android, Blackberry or iPhone). Here’s what I did to stop Google 2 step verification from sending SMS or Voice Call:

- Deactivate 2 step verification (from account settings)
- Reactivate 2 step verification (which goes to setup again)
- Instead of entering your number click the drop down menu and select either an Android, Blackberry or iPhone (See image above)
- Install Google Authenticator to your smartphone
- You’ll be given a QR code which you can scan (via bar scan at the bottom of Google Authenticator) or get the key code
- Provide a backup number and you’re all ready to go. Next time you login, you’ll just need your phone and you won’t be receiving a phone call or text.
