During the times when domaining becomes tough, what happens is that most domainers drop all domain names that are not performing well. So what happens to the money you’ve invested in it? gone? Wait, don’t drop it that easily, there’s so 2 ways you could use it to profit…
… Like real estate there are risks that you won’t be able to sell or do well on certain lands that you own. But it doesn’t mean to say that you should just keep losing money on these unused properties, there are other ways you could profit from it
Auctions
– Sell it to someone else –
List it up for sale in the domain name aftermarket or other sites like eBay. Start the price at $0, if nobody buys then you really haven’t loss much. But if someone buys it even for $1 then at least you’ve made something out of it. Chances are you’d at least get back the investment you’ve put in especially if that domain name does have a meaning to someone else.
Marketing
– Use the opportunity to promote –
If the auction left you with still a few domain names that you couldn’t sell, I’d recommend to use it for marketing purpose. Basically use that as a tool to generate interests and promote your portfolio online, if you’re lucky you might even be talked about at blogs where you get instant SEO. For example:
- Run Competitions on your blog (winner takes domain name)
- Give to other website owners in exchange for links
- Exchange for ads in other websites
The idea I have here is that let’s not waste what we’ve already spent something on, there will always be people who’d be interested and willing to pay or get it for free in return for something. If times really go bad at least you don’t have to spend more money in promoting your portfolio and you automatically get promoted for things that you’re about to throw away.
