At this time, where web 2.0 or 3.0 websites spring up everyday, the question “How much is my website / domain name worth?†becomes a really hotly searched term. With this boom, we see a lot of new startups grabbing domain names that are really weirdly named, like Flickr, HeyZap, etc. These domain names are called Brandable Domain Names…
… So how much are these web 2.0 / 3.0 domain names worth? I believe it’s worth nothing at all, however cute, short, remember-able they could be… *Unless* they are developed into something great that visitors will regularly visit and would have a high unique visit number.
– Web 2.0 3.0 Brandable domain names –
You could go and check Website value Calculators, but all it does is measure the links (going in and out of your website), and traffic coming from Alexa or Compete etc. The main point here is that they value your domain name and not your website. So I believe that it’s not very accurately priced as your website could do wonders but because not a lot of websites link to it, then it’s valued way lower.
There’s really no way for us to get an accurate value on how much our website or domain name is worth, the best way I found to value it is by looking at the revenues it generates. However it’s not accurate, as it could be a fad or a newer and better competitor comes up and takes the traffic away from you (in the future).
What’s important here is that let’s forget about how much is our domain name or website worth, but let’s simply focus and solve the fundamental problem of web 2.0 / 3.0 which is monetization. Find ways of generating higher revenues instead of being contented on how your website is valued by certain calculators. If you’re really lucky and big internet companies are interested in your website, then you’ll be valued more professionally and the true value of it comes down to “How much does the buyer think it’s worth?”.
