I personally have invested in both gTLDs and ccTLDs, and my route is similar to Morgan Linton of Domainvestors, where we develop our domains into minisites. After investing in a few gTLD, I felt that I wanted a new opportunity and jumped on the ccTLD bandwagon, little that I know that it is a very long term investment and its going to require time and money to keep a hold of these. While gTLD was making money straight away, in 1 to 2 months, you already get back the registration fee and by the next month you’re already able to pay for its own web hosting. gTLDs still dominate ccTLDs right now…
… ccTLDs are a very promising investment, its like going back to the 90′s and being able to register the domains that you’d want. But just like the 90′s, it’ll take time before people accept it as their own country’s domain. .PH, .COM.PH, and .BZ was where most of my money went and after buying I realized that I’d need to be able to maintain it to get significant value in the future.

So why is gTLD dominating ccTLD? In the short term, gTLDs can earn someone money quickly as you get the global search results and the CPC of other countries are normally higher. With ccTLDs, if your country doesn’t use it too often then it would just be a few cents. Also ccTLD’s are generally more expensive than gTLDs ($70 / 2 years vs $8 / year). Therefore ROI is fast and its the biggest money earners especially when talking about minisites. So why invest in ccTLDs? What’s in it for the investors? It will really work if you invest more time and money into developing the domains into useful websites (larger scale projects) that the country needs. That way you can dominate the country’s SEO, can be easily well known (with little or no local competitors) and you could attract direct advertisers easily.
What I learned from my experiences with gTLDs and ccTLDs is that some domains are short term and others are long term, more time and money would be required to push yourself forward with ccTLDs but the reward is potentially higher. But if you’re looking for a quick buck, you’ll never go wrong with gTLDs.
