I have been preaching so much about Generic Domain Names, they’re the best and most sought after domain names for it’s obvious benefits. Some of the Generic (.COMs) have sold at sky high amounts (millions) and is continuing to rise in value. But getting yourself a Generic Domain name doesn’t guarantee the success of the project or campaign, here’s why…
… Imagine if you bought a land in the middle of a very commercial area but you don’t have any idea what to do or plan to do with it. What happens? The land would just go to waste. The same goes for Generic Domain Names, it is merely there to give us a good head start but it is really up to us to push it further.
– Some land will go to waste –
What it needs is proper planning, preparation, hardwork, time and capital. Making an ugly looking website out of a generic domain name would just ruin its reputation and will not encourage repeat visits. I suggest adding web 2.0 design or concept to it as to making it interesting for your visitors.

Look at the case study of Men.COM which sold for $1.3 million, we all think wow what a great buy and it will be successful. But we were wrong, it was a case of zero planning and lots of capital to burn. It’s even worse than a minisite as it contains all the adsense and affiliate marketing links without any relevant contents. I feel that the domain name is wasted and is pretty much what people would call as cybersquatting. Nonetheless, if they had $1.3 million to invest in it, I’m sure they can afford to burn capital and continue to develop the website into something bigger and better.
I wish to acquire Premium Generic Domain Names in the future, but as of today, I’ll experiment different types and develop it accordingly. And when I do acquire that premium domain name, I’ll make sure that I learn lessons from other people’s mistakes.
