@Tim: To some it is exciting, but not if it’s so hard to read or when some backgrounds are an eye sore. I think uniformity which allows users to check each profile similarly is very important for usability. That’s where friendster failed in my eyes

You are wrong about Friendster personalization. The ability to personalize the wallpaper is one of the most attractive features of both Friendster and MySpace. Facebook can be boring.
