There’s so many free domain name / website providers for individuals and companies alike. There are free domain name / websites like geocities, multiply, blogger, wordpress, co.cc etc., but are they really worth it? I don’t think so…
… It is worth it if it was for your own personal use and you have no intention on making money from your website / domain name. But if you are like most people who would like to make money online or as a company’s website, then it’s definitely not worth it.
SEO-wise there’s really no way for you to compete for keywords with other paid domain name websites, the amount of effort you put in will be way greater than the effort that they will ever work for. If it was for making money online or as a company website, notice that you’ll find it hard to get to the number one results in search engines if there were a similar brand or keyword that another paid domain name targets.

– Free does have its costs –
Some of these free domain name / website also do have a revenue sharing program, where it could be 50-50 etc., but the main thing is that the revenue you’ve generated would’ve been more than the registration fee and could be profitable. For a company website, it would make your business look so bad not being able to afford a mere $7 / year registration fee where you look not trustworthy, micro and simply not credible.
The biggest disadvantage of all is that you’re at the mercy of the service provider, meaning if they do decide to pull the plug then your whole work goes down with it. Also if certain websites change management or features or suddenly want you to pay then you’re whole website is affected and worse case you just leave it to expire.
Free is a word that sounds really great online but like anything it does have its own costs. What you don’t want to happen is for it to hit you hard (like service provider shutdown) during the last minute and you don’t have much choice but to leave everything to go down with it. Spend $7 for a domain name, get a decent hosting for around $10 or less per month and please get yourself a decent website.
