Dropping a lot of .PH and .COM.PH for other .COMs and .NETs

ccTLD gTLD comparison Dropping a lot of .PH and .COM.PH for other .COMs and .NETsI’ve been thinking a lot lately as to how my domains are going to be, it was difficult to decide what stays and what goes as I have to admit that there are certain attachments to my own domains. But lately, I’ve started to have a clearer vision and really saw why choose a gTLD than a ccTLD. I’ve focused mostly on ccTLDs and really ignored gTLDs as I believed that there was a goldmine but without the support from the main registrar, I’m starting to see that its going to take some time.

As .PH and .COM.PH costs around $25 per domain for me each year, I’ve decided to keep a few of them that are performing well or the ones that have a huge potential according to searches. I can’t afford to renew them each year (as they don’t earn enough for their registration fee) as I want to invest that money elsewhere, where the Return of Investment is much faster.

Dropping .PH and .COM.PH over .COMs and .NETs

.COMs and .NETs are simply the king of the web and that’s proven, it’s the best for minisites which is pretty much what I do. However for ccTLDs like .PH and .COM.PH, minisites are simply something that can’t really earn much so you’d really need to develop it into full blown websites. Some of my .PH and .COM.PH that I’ll keep are the ones that I have plans to develop into a bigger and better websites and can’t risk it being taken by others. However, I’ve learned investing in gTLDs now and I clearly know what to do to get the big bucks or at least a Return on Investment in just a few months and I’d be more focused on building those as traffic is generally higher and clicks earn me more. As for my ccTLDs, development has started by my team and am starting to develop different websites for different communities which I expect to launch in a few months time. This time I have to go back to being a developer first, which I forgot as a domainer, quality over quantity and focus and love your website project.

It’s been a learning process for me and it’s been a costly process of trial and error, but I’m starting to see where my company should focus and where it will be in a few years time. I’m glad I explored my options well and have finally been clear as to what to do.

@F, The renewal for the dotPH domains is not $25. It is for the first year if you have the plan as a registrar. Otherwise, it reverts to the regular $35 per year/ What a stinking policy. I have lost one big customer because of that pricing scheme. This monopoly needs to evaluate its treatment of its customers. And as you said, we get no support whatsoever. In fact, it is competing againsts their very own customers in advertising dollars. They boasts that they have a million uniques a month. They must really be hurting.

Do you have any travel related PH domain?

  • Disapponted Domainer

@TechPinoy, I emailed you but you never emailed me back. What’s your idea?

  • http://www.king.net EM @ KING.NET

    Hi Francis,

If money is not an issue and it is a premium (valuable) domain, I suggest you keep it. The problem with .PH domains at this time is the advertising is very limited, only Adsense not to mention the pricing to manage this extension (registry is too greedy). How can you promote the .PH if the local can’t afford the price. Stupid management in dot PH. Yeah, bird brain (LOL). I register .com .net .org .etc for $9.95 with email (NeedName.com)

If you can get a local advertisers, such as travel agency, media and entertainment, local business, then this is good to keep.

I have a dream that I will be able to sell CASH.PH for $1+Million. Right now, local businesses still not seing the value of direct navigation.

Start building your portfolio in gTLD, then apply your success method in ccTLD.

@Disappointed Domainer: Totally agree with you, we’d need to get a new package to get the prices down. I really don’t know when they plan to change their policy but it’s really not helping us domainers or .PH / .COM.PH owners.

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

@Prime: I don’t think I have any specifically for travel. I did focus on products and services as opposed to geo or travel domains. Are you looking to invest more on travel domains? How’s it coming along?

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

@EM: Yeah it is somehow the registry not doing much promotion, pricing stays the same and not really giving support to us or people who own their domains. Yeah .COM and .NET costs $8 or less (Godaddy promo code) and could get my money back in a month or two.

Local advertisers, I believe, aren’t really focused and know much about where to advertise yet and it is pretty tough to convince them right now (In my own experience. But I hope with the support from internet entrepreneurs like us, it should hopefully open up.

Yeah gTLD is definitely needed to earn good profit while burn a bit of cash for ccTLDs, while it catches up with the local market.

@TechFilipino: I am more a developer more than a domainer. I was just wondrin if you have a .ph travel domain that you would like to drop.

By the way I have a gTLD that is doing very good. It is actually a content site and a .info one

  • Andre

Someone give me $18k to buy the big package and I will create a registrar system selling domains at nearly $15 each :)

  • Dispappointed

@andre, problem here is the renewals revert to $35.. Credits can not be applied to renewal.. That is what really sucks… I bet you one great domainer was also got disappointed when at he found out about this policy..
We really have a great registrar.. I guess they will land in the history as a “great provider”.

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

@Prime: I like how you make your websites, they look really great! It must be bringing in a lot of ad revenues for you. I haven’t really focused on travel domains so I have nothing to drop lol.

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

@Andre: LOL, That would be nice to have

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

@Disappointed: Are you serious? Damn, I didn’t know the renewal policy is like that. Can’t you use your existing credits to renew domains? Now that really sucks if you can’t renew your domains with prepaid credits and would need to pay $35 / year.

  • @disapponted

@F, Yes, that is the policy. That is why I will be losing a big client. This monopoly needs to do more in promoting internet use. Maybe they should get ideas from Godaddy.

  • Andre

hi Disappointed. Credits can be applied to renewals, i do it every year for my domains, not sure what you mean. there is no direct way to renew a domain without credits without using the Registrar system, you have to use it to renew domains. Credits can be purchased at any price, and you can use these credits to renew domains. I am not familiar with your situation but I would just like to say that I renewed some domains a few days ago using credits and everything is fine just as before. I’m not sure if our situations are different… but i dont think anything has changed on the dotPH end. Yes they have a monopoly, unfortunately we have to deal with it :)

@Disappointed Domainer: Here’s what dotph said – Hi,

    Good day!

Yes, you may renew this domain names under your partner console and renew
    them using your credits.

    Hope this helps.

  • Disapponted

I did some renewal a few weeks back and it did not work for me using my credits.
