To most Domain name buyers, uses of a domain name is very straight forward, buy connect to webhosting and make a website. However, when you do get pass that stage and start really investing in Domain names as an investor, you’ll be needing a lot of tools to track a lot of details. DomainTools provides a domain name investor with all the essential tools that one needs to get all the necessary information on domain names. What’s great about it…
… is that ‘most’ of their services are free. They have numerous tools that a member can use:
I’ve so far used their WhoIs services, which I found the most comprehensive Whois I’ve ever used. Aside from the registrant information, it also gives, SEO scores, (Alexa / Compete) ranks, inbound links, where the domain name is Hosting and even the registrant’s other domain names. The information given are spectacular, useful for those who owns their own domain to check how they’re doing and for those investigating other websites. Domain name generators are also great, where it uses three ways which is thru Domain Search, Domain name suggestion and Typo Generator to show similar domain names that match. What’s also great about their generators is that it generates available and unavailable with an option to filter available or unavailable domain names. The list is very comprehensive ranging to more than 10 pages of results, and seems to make some really good domain name combinations.
The Domain History, Name Server Spy and Domain Monitor are great ways to investigate a domain name, it’s great when you’re going to purchase a domain name from someone else or to find more information on a certain domain name. I love the way the website gives really comprehensive reports on important matters. But certain features here require payments, Silver ($15/month), Gold ($30/month), and Elite Membership ($300/month) which is converted to credits that members can use on their website.
I hope they could do a page report on a mix of their whois report together with Ghostery (hidden java-files) report to provide a more in-depth analysis on monetization and analytical tools (like quantcast or sitemeter) that might be of interest of the researcher). Certain features like reverse IP must also become free as other websites are offering this service for free, as it charges credits to have more than 5 results.
Overall, it’s a great ‘James Bond’-like tool for domain name investors. It gives them a great overview of what they’re going to buy, at the same time, give them more information on competitors for benchmarking. I like the service, and the tools are not so expensive at all (especially when you’re a domain name investor) as it gives you all the necessary information that you’ll be needing. I just hope a free version would come and offer similar services.
