When you read the domaining news, what you’ll see is that this domain was sold for $X million and that domain was sold X times the price it was bought for. The domaining view is as if holding the domain will make you a millionaire right away. Realistically speaking, a domain, whether it is a killer domain or a normal brandable domain, is only a domain what really matters is what’s in the domain.
Domains are simply not enough to guarantee success. Us, domainers, we’re a bit biased for domains (We buy and sell domains for a living) but that’s because having a killer domain can really get you the exposure in Search Engines and get traffic.
– Domains are like the traditional real estate –
Why are domains not enough?
It is like a shop, it doesn’t matter if you put your shop in the busiest street in town but if you have a shady looking place and just sells crap then you won’t expect me to go or even buy anything off you right? Same goes for domains, if you have a nice website that goes with your killer domain, you’re guaranteed that you’re at least ahead of your competitors. But if you simply make a crappy looking one page ad full minisite then you won’t expect visitors to come by the thousands right? One thing I learned is you got to have a good looking website and unique and useful content to go along with it. Remember, just like a shop, treat customers (visitors) like a king.
This is not a personal attack to the domaining industry, but I’d like people to know the realistic side of things. Owning a digital property is the same as a regular property, there are risks and there are many disaster or unsuccessful stories.

your domain is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it
@Andre: Very very true, but its too bad most often people are willing to pay less than what you have in mind LOL
