Domain Registration Fees for .COM and .NET set to increase in July 1, 2010, Thanks to Verisign

Verisign increase domain registration cost 300x154 Domain Registration Fees for .COM and .NET set to increase in July 1, 2010, Thanks to VerisignI believe this news affects all of us who owns .COM and .NET domains. A price increase on domain registration fees has been set by Verisign for 2010, an increase of 7% to the prices that are currently offered. The .COM increases from $6.86 to $7.34 and the .NET increases from $4.23 to $4.65. So how does this affect you?…

Pricing of a domain name is pretty straight forward, it is calculated by Verisign’s fee + ICANN’s fee ($0.20) + Registrar’s fee. And as ICANN sets the prices higher, we, as the end users, gets affected as our domain registrars would need to raise their prices to cope with the increase.

domain registration fee increase Domain Registration Fees for .COM and .NET set to increase in July 1, 2010, Thanks to Verisign– Around $0.50 increase per domain –

.COM and .NET are the most sought after and highly valued domains online, with more domains being registered with them than any other extensions, it seems logical why they chose to raise this price. 7% may not seem to much, but if you think about it, it’s around $0.50 increase which could increase your total renewal fees (especially if you own hundreds or thousands of domains!). And what really sucks about it, is that it is allowed under the agreement between Verisign and ICANN.

With this price increase, I’m expecting that domain registrars are going to increase their prices as well, maybe not the same time in July 2010 but it could be felt during the last quarter of 2010. As I’ve been preaching religiously about ccTLDs, could it be that this move could put ccTLDs in a better and more attractive position for people to get than the .COM or .NET? It’ll be an interesting fact to find out.
