Domain Names: Why Domaining is quite unknown

Domaining or investing in domain names is quite an undiscovered territory by many people, even the ones that have used the interned for a very long time. Most people are aware of the URLs of the website, but don’t really get the virtual real estate side of things. It’s quite funny how people react with blank faces when you say the word domaining, and these are some reasons why I believe domaining is still not so known:

Fraud

– Hackers, Phishers, thieves, the internet? –

One of the biggest reason, I believe, why people are scared to invest or explore in the undiscovered world of domaining is that the Internet as a whole has a bad reputation for frauds thru phising, hacking, etc. Thanks to the cyber squatters and the lawsuits (Trademark infringements) that followed, this even placed a bigger negativity towards domainers. Which is not always true, as not all domainers invest in typo domain names or trademarked ones. This negative image has stopped potential investors in the domaining industry which are the SME’s (Small & Medium Enterprises). SME’s could invest good deal of money and be able to compete with larger enterprises thru the power of the internet.

Intangible

– Investing in something that you can’t see, feel, or touch –

Another thing that stops people from investing here is that it’s virtual, which is intangible. With internet just opening up to most people, they still don’t consider placing their money into the internet without anything to hold or touch. Just like when you buy a property there are title deeds that can prove it’s yours vs just an email saying that you own the place (which can be deleted and lost forever). I think people have to be open to technology now, sooner or later, papers are going to be a thing of the past. People need to be open to change and think of the big investment opportunities that lie online. Because domain name values are expected to rise.

Monetizing

– How to make money online? –

Monetizing is a big problem, not only in domaining but also in the website development (web 2.0) industry. It is way cheap to invest in domain names right now, but if they’re not able to monetize or profit from it, it won’t be a sound investment wouldn’t it? I think bloggers are doing a great part of this which is to educate people on how to make money online and domainers that blog about selling domain names are doing great as well on spreading the word out. It’s about being patient and learning the trade first before doing any major investment, there are a lot of things to learn here and lots of mistakes to be made. What’s important is to keep trying and keep pushing and you’ll see the rewards soon.
