Desk Space Genie: Rent out my empty desk

deskspacegenie Desk Space Genie: Rent out my empty deskI had a website idea before on renting a parking space to someone, but now another website goes a bit further by renting out an empty desk space. Desk Space Genie is really a creative website that thought of renting empty office desk spaces for others to use. What’s really interesting about it…

… is how the pricing works to rent a desk out. Currently it is only available in the UK, averaging costs of 170 UK Pounds per month some with or without bills and utilities. It’s a big price to pay but the savings in doing so is way less than getting yourself the office space. What’s also great is that it’s a win-win situation for advertiser and desker (in principle),

where the advertiser:

  • Earns revenue for the unused desk space
  • Environmental benefits (less wastes desk vs office)
  • Office diversity, a more lively and occasional freelance skill.

The desker

  • Less distractions from home
  • Working environment
  • Credible office address
  • Better location and facilities

The best of all is that it’s free (well, until May 1, 2009), which allows advertisers to post their empty desks for free. However there are also a downside to both sides:

Advertiser

  • Confidentiality (private information in the office given to outsiders)
  • Conflicts between Office people and Lessee

Desker

  • No phone line (might or might not have)
  • Lack of control
  • Loss of space (when office needs more desks)
  • Facilities included is not standard (some offices will have certain facilities and some don’t)

This idea, I believe, is great. In times of recession, where offices are cutting back on staff, it would be nice for them to generate additional income while maintaining their office space. As for the Deskers, they could save up their cash from renting an office space and get less risk by doing so. It’s a great idea, but to how far it will go is and if advertisers are willing to risk disclosing confidential (company secrets) to deskers. As in recession, it’s best to increase revenues but the risk of competitors getting your secret is great too, it’s like a double edged sword, and companies must take that into consideration.
