Cut your domain name portfolio, focus on your top domain name and develop

cut domain name portfolio developDomaining today has really changed from domaining yesterday, in the old times (not too old), people would just get domain names and park it and get decent revenues. Today, we won’t see that happening, parking revenues are down and people are forced to develop their domain names. The trend right now is to focus on domain name development

… One of the my biggest mistakes was that I kept acquiring domain names, thinking that it was going to be worth millions by just sitting there (it’s also one of the biggest misconception). But as newbie domainers learn and understand (just like I did) the game of domaining, we get quite frustrated and look for a way out. Here’s where domain name development comes in.

Domain name development then enters our head and we start developing, what’s the problem now? We don’t even know where to start, what to do or which domain name should go first (here’s my suggestion of which goes first).

constant revenues from domain name development

– It’s the constant revenues that we need to stay in the game –

The first thing to do is to cut out some of your domain name portfolio, stop spending and start focusing, remove the poor performing and retain the good ones. Then focus on your top domain names (generic keyword domain names, high CPC, High Searches etc.) and start developing. You could mass develop minisites or really get a handful domain names or make a web 2.0 project in it. The point is to really focus on developing to have constant revenues while waiting for a potential buyer to come along to buy a domain name off you (which could really, I mean really, take a while).

Buying and Selling domain names is really a good business model but the problem is that it’s not liquid. Before you could sell one domain name, it could take a long time and proper procedures before you get paid for it. The important thing is to have constant revenues to get you to stay in the game.

  1. I agree with these, you going to lose a lot of resource and opportunity if you continue to buy domain without taking any action on development…

  2. @Aris: That’s right, parking isn’t paying up much and you’ll need all the time and effort for your development and SEO for the top domain names

  3. Great post, I am a nowbie domainer, I just began to learn that I should have focus, focus on important domains and filter out the garbages. I am also building my site http://www.agilenames.com to get more eyeballs.

  4. @JamesHu: Yeah, I’ve learned that the hard way and looks like I’m not alone . Let me know how agilenames go
