Compete.com had the wrong website statistics

compete logo 300x125 Compete.com had the wrong website statisticsI’m sure most of the web masters love their website stats, I check them regularly and find how my traffic is doing. Aside from Google Analytics, another website I regularly go to to check my stats is Compete.com. But recently, my stats in Compete.com has dropped crazily, from a 4000+ traffic monthly to a whopping 190+ last month!…

Compete.com has been my favorite place to not only check my own traffic but if I was scouting other websites’ or competitors’ traffic. The best thing about it was that there’s no installation involved of any kind, it just measures all websites it indexes. It used to be very reliable and was really helpful for me to see how well I’m doing. But something in their system is wrong.

I’m not really sure as to how they calculate the traffic on a given website, I’m not sure whether it is like Alexa where you need a toolbar or plugin to be counted as a traffic but it sure can be demotivating. What’s worse is that how can you attract potential advertisers to advertise if they’re showing a record that’s way off. Last month it showed 190+ visitors only, but as I checked my Google Analytics reports, I got 2500+ visitors. I’m not so sure as to why that has happened but that seriously isn’t right.

I’m really starting to hate these type of analytics which expects people to install their toolbar or plugin to count traffic, with billions of people around the world still getting accustomed to the idea of the internet, how are you going to measure the visitors without counting those without the toolbar? I’ll be ignoring these type of stats from now on.

I think Compete.com is strongly biased toward American traffic. I would imagine that much of your traffic comes from outside the US. I’ve had similar problems to you on websites of mine with significant non-US traffic. Alexa seems much more accurate for non-US websites.

@Jeff: That’s true, it’s always been about US traffic for them. But what’s worse is that it makes international country websites look bad. You’re right Alexa is much better, but I stopped checking and just focused on Google Analytics.

I’m in the US and Compete.com showed a really low count for my website 154 for last month when Google Analytics shows over 2000+. I think Compete is WAY off for everyone!

No disrespect to you guys but compete is a ton worse than that..you guys are complaining about a few hundred hits..how about compete totally missing out on 200,000 hits from within the u.s. month after month after month. I reached out to compete.com and it’s like talking to a wall they don’t care and hate to have their technology questioned. What amazes me is that they even have the wrong stats for gigantic sites with hundred of millions of visitors a month like facebook.

@Webpublisher: LOL! I can certainly relate to that. It’s weird that you have to install their plugin to count as a visit. Which normal internet user would install such plugin right?

True. Compete gets it completely wrong. Don’t know how they calculate traffic stats for sites, but however that is, it is absolutely, completely, totally WRONG! My company’s e-commerce site has been getting 30K+ uniques monthly for well over 6 months now and compete says we’re still at around 2K UV p.m. I completely stopped using compete a couple of months ago. You can’t count on competitor stats you get from compete. Its obvious all of that will be incorrect as well.

Yeah, it can really hurt you especially when advertisers look up to it. It’s just a shame that it has built a good reputation while giving wrong results.

it says the site i work on gets about 24,000 page impressions per month when we actually do about 6,000,000. it’s staggeringly bad. quantcast is quite bad as well, but at least they let you directly track visitors via their javascript.

Yeah I know, it sucks and some companies use it which reflects low visitor count
