co.cc: Free Domain Names review

cc logo co.cc: Free Domain Names reviewHave hosting but no domain name? Co.cc is a domain name registrar that provides you with a easy to remember domain name suffix. What makes co.cc different is that they provide domain names for free. I’ve registered myself techfilipino.co.cc. What I like about it…

… is that the free domain name has such a great suffix that it makes it so easy to remember. What’s also great is that unlike other services that just forwards your domain name to another, it can point to name servers of your hosting which becomes your main domain name address. And if you do have other domains (such as blogspot or wordpress etc.) you could use co.cc to tell  others about your frwebsite and improve the way your website is remembered. It also gives you a free cc.cc domain name which is an ecommerce website equipped with payment features from paypal and google checkout for ease of payment online, and where you can post the products (you own) that you want to sell online.

There are also common domain names that needs to be paid (premium) depending on how short or common the domain name is (there are $3, some $22 etc.). However, a user can only register 2 domain names and registrations are limited to a year. For you to register more than 2 domains, you’ll have to donate to them and you can register up to 100 domain names. This would help a lot of people who would like to have a nice domain name but don’t want to pay for it, bloggers on blogspot could move from blogger to wordpress using this service and retain a “free” blog (accompanied by free hosting). It’s a great way to encourage more wordpress users and experience the difference of having a self hosted wordpres blog.

I just wish you could keep it for more than a year. It used to be my favorite free domain service until they made that rule.

@Star Bright: That’s true, but you could renew it year after year and it’s still a free service.

I review co.cc free domain as top class free domain providers. I have great experience up to this date. They have excellent support service. Some consider co.cc bit spam based. I consider it best free top level domain (TLD) like .com domains. Best of luck co.cc

@Web: It’s not really TLD but it is a good alternative and is free. It’s good to hear that you’ve done well with .co.cc.

    Hi Tech,

Just curious. I’m interested in testing some co.cc to see how well they rank with low competition keywords.

Can you tell me (roughly) how long it takes to:

    a) get a co.cc indexed?
    b) can co.cc’s rank well in Google.com?
    c) are they reliable, ie no DNS issues ever?

    Many thanks

  • http://www.gangventures.com TechFilipino

    @Dave: Thanks for dropping by,

    a) Getting a co.cc indexed might actually take a while compared to a paid domain.
    b) I personally haven’t tried it but I haven’t seen a .co.cc ranking highly
    c) They are reliable as a service, I haven’t seen any reports or on my personal experience any DNS issues.

    Hi Tech,

Thanks for the reply. It’s interesting because I have seen some co.cc’s rank on page one of Google for very low competition kws (so I guess I sort of answered my own question b lol). But, I think they have to be pretty low competition, but still, that’s ecnouraging.

Still debating whether to try them or not or if they’d be a waste of time, ie writing content, getting backlinks, etc. only to get poor results. They’re technically subdomains right?

Do you host your own co.cc (which I noticed simply redirects here) or do you use a free host to be inline with the “setting up a blog for free” message?

Anyway, I guess I should simply experiment and report my results :)

    Cheers buddy,

    Dave

@Dave: Yeah, you could make it rank well but I believe that Google doesn’t rank it as fast as a paid domain as it is a subdomain still.

Honestly I’ve just tried the service, but I don’t really believe in free as they could take it away or charge you for that once you built up the SEO. End of the day, the control isn’t with you.

Have you tried getting a co.cc rank high?

  • Dave

    Hi again Tech,

I agree with the “free” thing and they could take it away. That’s troubling but, it MAY be a good way to test really low competition keywords??

I’ve seen some co.cc’s have PR so that’s encouraging I suppose.

I havne’t tried any co.cc’s but I’ll probably pay $10 to get 100 “domains” and slap some wordpress blogs on there with some content and see what happens. If you’re interested (or your readers) I can report back any results such as: indexing, ranking, traffic, etc.

I may try simple CSS sites but WP has some good plugins so I may go for that instead. :)

    Cheers for the info!

@Dave: sure, do let us know how it goes. I’d love to know how it performs compared to other domains.
