Being a big fan of multimedia, I’ve been in the lookout for the best player out there. And today, I have the chance to review Fukuda’s Android Smart Box. This box makes your tv smarter and allows you to use it like a big computer (Big monitor) and a very small CPU computer. Affordable and powerful, this box would surely be a good Christmas present. Here’s my review of Fukuda Android Smart Box.

What’s included in the Fukuda Android Smart Box:

  • Fukuda Android Smart box
  • HDMI Cable
  • Male to Male USB Cable
  • Remote Control
  • Adapter
  • Manual
  • Warranty Card

Fukuda Android Smart Box Multimedia Review:

The device was pretty small and easy to carry, I was really surprised that at its size that it is quite a powerful device. It has a 1.8 Ghz Quad Core CPU with a 2GB DDR3 RAM and a 16GB internal storage. Armed with the latest Android OS (KitKat 4.4), it was pretty fast and was great in performance.

I was streaming 1080p videos (HDMI) from my network storage and it played perfectly. For those with older TVs, you can use their AV cables (red, yellow & white cable) to connect it. The device came with default apps which makes it a good video streaming device. I played Real Steel with it at a file size of about 4GB and streamed pretty fast using the WiFi connection. What’s even better is that it has its own LAN port to connect to the web, which improves network speed.

The Remote controller also was a great accessory, you can use it to click buttons or to use it as a mouse (Using the directional keys to move), it is enough for multimedia use. Here’s the really cool part, it has 4 USB ports to connect your storage devices and other accessories like keyboards or mouse. It also has a memory card slot that enables you to expand the memory further.  It also comes with other cool stuff like a camera (for skype or online video chat), optical audio socket and a Bluetooth 4.0 (connect wireless keyboards and mouse with).

I was able to watch and surf on my TV pretty smoothly, I love how the default apps played my videos over the network smoothly. This is definitely a better device than other multimedia players out there and way cheaper than their prices.

Fukuda Android Smart Box Work Review:

After I have tested the multimedia, I suddenly had the thought of it being used as a computer on its own. With pretty good specs and connectors, this can be easily plugged into any monitor and be used for work.

Fukuda-android-smart-box

Fukuda Smart Box

To test this out, I simply had to connect my bluetooth keyboard and mouse on my device. And after downloading a lot of productivity and work apps, this instantly turns a normal android device to a work type of computer. Being able to load up office documents, mind mapping tools and with the browsers be able to work as I would on a computer. What’s great is that it is a fraction of the size of a normal PC CPU, but brings in good performance similar to middle end devices in the market.

It is not everyday that we hear a local Filipino electronics brand that is affordable and with good quality, Fukuda surely makes us proud to have a local brand of our own that has expanded internationally to Jakarta. Their electronics range from different household appliances to cameras and tablets, they’re always expanding their product line. Looking at their price list and specs, this tablet should be your December gift list! It’s slim, sleek and modern! Here’s my review of Fukuda Android Tablet FCT-93RK8:

fukuda-android-tablet-fct-93rk8

Fukuda FCT-93RK8 Box Contents

What’s included in the Fukuda Tablet box:

  • Tablet
  • Adapter
  • Manual
  • Protective Sleeve
  • Earphones
  • Screen Protector (Pretty Cool for me!)
  • Micro USB to USB converter

It’s great that they have all the necessary accessories inside the box, but like earphones and screen protector is simply a big bonus.

How did my experience go:

When I first opened the box, I was truly amazed on how the packaging was all done up (The tablets feels so protected). It also comes with the right accessories and protective accessories to ensure that the tablet gets the most protection from using it. I really like how they’ve put the importance of keeping your gadget protected. What I also like about this model is that the screen was pretty big so my (big) fingers could tap the right buttons correctly as opposed to others where I struggled with all the typos I did. So the 9″ screen surely has its advantages for me and was great for videos too.

App Page Fukuda Tablet

There’s usually three things I use my tablet for, it’s work, entertainment and games. This Fukuda Jellybean tablet has never failed my expectation, the response time was great and no lags. For work, I usually use Microsoft Office Mobile and Gmail, both were pretty easy to use. I was able to edit documents pretty fast and respond to emails better.

`

Simply using the ES File Explorer, I was able to load videos that were 1080p from my network drive and watch it in the tablet nicely. With the 9 inch screen, the video played wonderfully big (compared to phones). What I also like was they had their own earphones, usually when you buy android tablets, it does not come with it.

fukuda-android-tablet-fct-93rk8-games

Game by Punch Hero

What I was pretty impressed about was that the latest games worked smoothly with the device. I was able to play punch hero and spiderman with no lags and responsive. These games are still part of the latest popular games, and it runs smoothly and the gaming experience is perfect. I experienced no lags with the games and I even felt that it’s pretty fast.

It’s also got 2 x 2MP cameras, a front and a back. It supports 3g dongles, and if you’d ever need more space for your apps, you can insert a memory card of upto 32GB. The weight was pretty light and easy to carry, the battery life was enough for me for a whole day.

What I didn’t find is the HDMI port where I can connect it to the TV directly, that said, I don’t think though that it is very needed as you wouldn’t want to be playing a 1080p from the tablet to the HD TV. What I would do is to look into the smart box dedicated to the TV, which Fukuda has also sent for review (stay tuned).

Overall, I like Fukuda’s tablet, I can see that they’ve really added the quality part very seriously and have grown their brand ever since. Their tablet can definitely be used for home, work and multimedia, and here’s the best part of all this is that it only costs P4,500 (for the 9 inch while the 7 only costs P3,500)! For the price you pay, you really get quality specs and with power and performance.

Ekotek is one of the most economical brand for tablets and mobile phones, but economical isn’t the only thing, they’ve got great specs too. I was lucky enough to be sent units (Ekotab 7, Encore L & Encore D) over for review and I have to say that this has really changed the way I look at the prices of tablets.

Design

Ekotek-Ekotab-7-L-D-back

The tablets look pretty sleek, with a modern design that isn’t far off with the more popular brands. Ekotab 7, their latest tablet, has a sleek design, curvy and with enough space to hold without touching the screen. While the Ekotab Encore D and L are both similar in terms of specs but they differ in design, D has a white spotted back while the L has a leather like back.I like the fact that it’s 7 inch which is handy as I walk around and use the tablet. And what’s cool is that each one has a front facing and back facing camera.

Connectivity

Ekotek Ekotab 7

The cool thing about these tablets is that it has different ways to connect, First, each one has WiFi, USB ports (Micro for D&L and Mini for 7), and a slot for memory cards to increase memory and to transfer files around. But with the Ekotab 7, there’s more, there’s even an HDMI port and a regular USB port. There’s just so many ways to move files around and makes it easy for even non-techies to do it.

Performance

Ekotab screenshot Games

Every one of the tablets has at least a Dual Core 1GHz Processor and at least a 512 RAM which is enough to work, play or for entertainment. I was able to stream videos from my local network as well as stream videos from YouTube at great speeds. Playing games was also great, there really wasn’t much lag playing the latest games from Play Store.

My Personal Opinion on Ekotab

Ekotab-7-Encore-D-L-Tablets

At the price of less than 5,000 pesos each, these tablets are worth the price. It is a fraction of the cost of branded ones but is as powerful if not more than the popular ones. The look is also very sleek and something you won’t be hesitating to bring out of your house, You’ve got to love how these tablets look. I also like the fact that I can connect to it with many different means and be able to connect via HDMI is just perfect for me to stream videos over to my TV. The battery life is great! I was able to do a lot of work, games and watch videos the whole day and have 40% battery to spare.

As an entrepreneur, these devices are great to use in a business. From operations to office work, these tablets are a perfect buddy for your business needs. I can imagine these being used as entertainment tablets, order taking, and other out-of-the-box solutions which can improve customer experience.

One thing I was never too careful about was Personal Finance, I thought it was simple, just don’t spend more than you earn. But it’s not as simple as it is, how would you know if you’re overspending on one thing and underspending on another? Sometimes, it’s good to learn your spending habits to learn more about yourself and to reach your target savings / investments / goals. So I started to check online on programs that could help me out on this, and the best one I found is Toshl.com! It’s simple yet very insightful, I believe this is the best in the market so far.

Toshl personal Finance App

Here’s an overview of what I love about Toshl:

Toshl Personal Finance App

  • Operates on any Web Browser, iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone 7
  • Multiple Users for One Family
  • Simple and Very easy to Learn
  • Set Budgets and stop yourself from overspending
  • Interesting Charts and Graphs to illustrate your spending habits.
  • Export to PDF, Excel, CSV or Google Docs
  • Secure your Account on your phone
  • It’s FREE and paid versions are Affordable

Operates on any Web Browser, iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone 7

Toshl Personal Finance App compatibility

When I was looking for a personal finance app, my criteria was that it has to work on both iOS and Android (my wife uses android). There was not too many apps on this, closest one I found was Expensify but that was only for expenses and most often used in companies. I wanted something personal and Toshl was just the perfect app I was looking for. It’s able to run on both our phones, iPads and our laptops too. Making it very convenient for us to encode our expenses income and budgets.

Multiple Users for One Family

toshl personal finance family expenses

I like the fact that my wife and I can both use one account for our family. My wife uses android and I use iOS, and we both can input our own data and have all synced into one account. It’s perfect for tracking our family budgets together! Next time when my baby grows up, I’ll make sure that he starts using this too.

Simple and Very easy to Learn

Toshl personal finance app add expenses

My wife (who’s not tech savvy) and I didn’t really take too much time to learn Toshl. It is so simple that I believe anyone can pick it up right away, my wife didn’t even need to be trained! All you need is to input an expense / income, tag or categorize what that falls under, and add notes, it’s that simple. The cartoon characters makes this app more fun! And not to mention, make it look cute and more like a kiddie game, but you’re really doing personal finance.

Set Budgets and Stop yourself from Overspending

Toshl Personal Finance App Budgets

One thing I love about Toshl is the ability to add budgets, it is simply the budget you set for certain spending category. So before you spend on anything, you can consult your budgets if you can still spend. What’s also cool about this is that if you try to input an expense and you’re overbudget, you can set it to alert you and try to stop you from overspending. I just love this feature, I use this before I go to and pay or think about buying anything.

Interesting Charts and Graphs to illustrate your spending habits

Toshl Personal Finance App Charts and Graphs

I love charts and graphs, it just shows me great insights to my expenses. I believe this is great to really dig deeper and understand your spending habits. You can even compare specific tags / categories of expense to each other which can reveal things that you would miss in numbers. You’ve got to try it out!

Export to PDF, Excel, CSV or Google Docs

Toshl Personal Finance App Export Feature

You can easily export as a report to any of the following extensions: PDF, Excel, CSV or Google Docs. If you also get the premium version, they can email you the monthly reports automatically! This is good if you’d like a backup of your file somewhere close to you.

Secure your Account on your Phone

Toshl Personal Finance App Lock Screen

Let’s face it, your phone can be lost or stolen. So when that happens what then? Are you completely exposed including your financials? Well this app takes care of that, you can setup a lock screen where they have to input the pincode to access your account. Not only that, you can even revoke the account on your phone thru their website. So you’d feel completely safe, I love this feature.

It’s FREE and paid versions are Affordable

Toshl personal finance app FREE

Yes, it is FREE! With the Free version, you get unlimited expenses, 1 source of income and 1 budget. With the paid version (around $19.99 per year, can go cheaper if you go for the 3 years plan), you get everything, unlimited income and budgets and advanced charts and the automatic sending of monthly reports. I think this isn’t as expensive as what the app can do. Here’s a quick tip, currently (March 14,2013), they have a promotion that if you Share (Facebook and Twitter) their cool infographics, you get 20% off the price (so you can get it for around $16)!

Final Thoughts on Personal Finance App – Toshl

I just love this app, it makes personal finance such an easy task. What I also love is that it tells me to stop spending when I’m overbudget! lol! This would mean more savings for my family. I do wish though that one day they could make “family” accounts I personally recommend this to anyone who wishes to track and assess their own personal finances.

Cloud-Based email management enables organizations to reclaim email as a genuine business asset, this is because of the cloud’s solution’s ability to guarantee availability of service not to mention the functional and financial benefits that the business gets.

cloud based email

What we need from email

Email today is unquestionably the most important and significant business communication tool. Email users (pretty much all of us) have become so dependent upon our corporate email that around 30% of our working day is spent doing something in our email clients, and we check email almost constantly. Consequently, when email systems go down it can prove costly to the business.

Unplanned outages can result in lost productivity, decreased customer satisfaction and unforeseen delays, all of which can do serious damage to corporate reputation. Quite simply, email is no longer solely a means of desktop communication. It has become an extensive and mobile information portal – and therefore ensuring that it remains continuously available is now a business imperative.

What businesses are up against

With ever-decreasing budgets and increasingly dependent and savvy end users, IT departments are challenged with eliminating downtime, whilst mitigating and managing email-borne risks. Despite this, scheduled maintenance and unplanned downtime remain a fact of corporate life, and it is therefore necessary for IT staff to provide alternate means of sending and receiving critical content.

Technical challenges

Email’s evolution into a mobile, multi-platform tool has seen end-user demands soar, presenting often complex challenges for IT administrators. Beyond ensuring the continuous availability of the core messaging service, the ongoing functionality of supplementary, on-premise systems such as archiving solutions and security must also be considered.

How to ensure email continuity

A closely-integrated cloud-based email solution should guarantee – regardless of outages – continued email provision, alongside the uninterrupted delivery of other ancillary systems like email archiving, and sturdy privacy and security systems.

What’s more, a cloud-based solution worth its salt should be manageable from a single, web-based console, and deliver automatic fail-over and fail-back during outages. In essence, email system administration, including dealing with primary system outages, should be all but invisible to the end user.

Mimecast has created just such a solution. Its Unified Email Management (UEM), ticks all of the boxes – backed by robust SLAs, including 100% service. As Jaco van der Merwe, the AA’s head of IT, put it:

“There is no doubt that Mimecast UEM has solved our issues in terms of continuity and disaster recovery, and it ensures a far more secure Outlook setup with comprehensive spam filtering. It has improved storage and archiving capabilities and reduced our capex costs, enabling us do more with less.”

If you are a smartphone owner then chances are that you own either a handset that runs the Android OS, or you own an iPhone since these two are the most popular phones that are currently trending in the market. These two brands account for over 50% of the total number of smartphones in the world today and a quick glance at their specs and their capabilities will give you a good reason why this is so, although most people would agree that Android smartphones with comparable specs tend to be cheaper than their iPhone counterparts.

Android vs iPhone

Android OS

Android devices are the exception in the market these days. The Android OS has been designed so that it can run on any current generation smart phone, as well as being built for the phones we will own in the future. This means that any handset manufacturer can use the Android software, giving their customers a platform that shares interface, accessibility and usability with thousands of other models and makes. Because of this, the software that is created to run on this platform can be standardized allowing it to reach a much bigger audience than it would otherwise. Some of the Android devices have top of the line hardware, which means that you can run high graphics game. However it is Google play or Samsung’s App that isn’t as big as iPhone’s appstore which gives it more limited titles to play.

iPhone iOS

The iPhone has always been touted as the must have gadget for the App hungry tech-head. The App store boasts millions of apps and each of them are quality tested before release. This means that iPhone apps are less likely to infect your phone with a virus or give you any unpleasant surprises. For those who prefer online casino sites to apps, the built in web browser offers everything that you might possibly need to get online and find your next jackpot win. Click here to visit River Belle casino which is one of the most popular ones out there at the minute with reviews having praised their selection of slots games and general usability. They have one of the most biggest app selections with all the coolest and independent games that you can choose to play.

The Winner of Android vs iPhone?

Each particular OS has its pros and its cons so in the end it really depends upon the style you prefer and whether you want to be able to access every web site on the internet, or whether you’re happy to simply play the games that are available through the app store. There are also a number of other factors that swing the decision to either side but as we said it’s really upon the discretion of the user as to what he wants to go for – features, style, design or simply the price. Though in our opinion Android offers better value for money, but nothing beats having a huge selection of games with strong enough graphics to run them all. iPhone Wins!

Which one wins for you iPhone vs Android?

As everyone is on the go, mobile phones have become an increasingly needed item that people carry everyday. As technology becomes cheaper so should mobile phones right? But it’s not, the phone itself is expensive (especially when it is bought early on its release date) plus the cost of your monthly usage costs. And if you don’t pay too much attention, you’ll find costs can run up pretty fast. With this in mind, here are a 3 ways on how to buy new mobile phone cheap.

buy new mobile phones cheap

Sim Only Deals

While phones can be bought on it’s own, sometimes combining it with a contract / line for your mobile phone can save you a lot of money. Why? Well it’s all because, aside from getting the mobile phone for cheaper rate or even free, you can get great usage deals that can even give unlimited calls or texts.

But here’s where you need to watch out, it can get more expensive than buying just the phone (either paying high amounts in the long run or exceeding your contract). To control your monthly costs, we can recommend going for sim only deals, where you buy your phone and sim only deals separately. So calculate the phone costs plus the monthly contract, and calculate getting the phone plus your typical usage costs, that should give you a good idea whether you’re getting a good deal. This way, you can get a lower plan when you’re not a high usage user.

Choice of Phone

Choosing a phone model could affect your costs, there’s a huge difference between iPhones and Samsungs vs other brands like Nokia. What we suggest is to find out the features of the phone you want, compare with other phone models and then decide. Do remember that new phones are launched every year but some offer very little difference, like a more apps or tweaked OS or a cool new design.

So don’t be fooled by advertisements, designs or whatever, do check on what you need and compare different models to get the best phone model at the lowest price. Remember same specifications and hardware but different design, brand and price.

Wait a little longer

New Cellphones come out every month, waiting a few months later wouldn’t hurt but the price might be slightly cheaper. Patience can truly give you a better deal for your money, after all, what would be the difference between a few months of buying the phone when the price is way cheaper.

It generally takes 3 months for prices to come down (falls in quarters), as demand for the phone eases so does the price. So do wait a little to get it at a bargain price.

Smartphones are everywhere and, as a stock trader / investor, you’ve got to be able to trade on the move whether you are on 3G or Wifi. One thing I did when I started investing in the stock market was to find apps that would be able to give me up to date information about the market (that’s the geek side of me). So I did find a few and these are what I believe to be the 3 iPhone Apps that every PSE Stock trader / investor must have.

I apologize to Android users as I don’t have an Android phone and have used iPhone ever since Nokia (it has been very useful for me). I shall start from the free apps then move on to the paid ones.

3 iPhone Apps that every PSE Stock Trader / Investor must have

Bloomberg App

bloomberg iphone app pse stock investor trader

I believe every iPhone has a built in Bloomberg app, if you don’t make sure that you download this. So it’s not 100% built for PSE stocks but here’s what’s cool about it, PSE stocks are included in the list. You can search for the stock symbol followed by PM (e.g. PGOLD:PM) or you can search for the whole name of the stock. You can view the stock details and if you rotate your phone sideways, it shows you the chart of the stock (you can touch the chart to show you the price at certain point in time). It also has a portfolio feature where you can add you purchases and keep track of your gains/losses. A word of warning, for people who need the up-to-the-minute prices, the data is lagged by a few hours so the prices are delayed.

Broker Apps (Philstocks & FirstMetroSec)

philstocks firstmetrosec iphone app pse stock investor trader

If you are using an online broker of either Philstocks.ph (Accord Capital) or FirstMetroSec, you’re in luck as they’ve got an app for you. I have featured Philstocks XAVI for Philstocks.ph and you can read more about it in my previous post. And if you’re with FirstMetroSec, it is more comprehensive, it even has tickers. It has charts, tickers, and more comprehensive data, it would be nice if Philstocks.ph would copy some of the features that they have on this app (Philstocks guys, if you’re listening, please do try to copy some of their features).

iPhilstocks Pro

If there was an app that I personally purchased that would be iPhilstocks Pro ($1.99), it has all basic information you’ll ever need to trade on your phone. What’s really cool about this app is that it has all the stock information, portfolio, global / PSE index, Charts, news, market performers and news (not perfect). What I use this app for is mainly to look into market performers and see all the movers and valuations that they have. And if I want to dig deeper, I usually check individual stock information and their charts. What I was not too happy about this app is that it used to be the old iPhilstocks app, but instead of updating, they made a new one and charged $1 more. But, at the end of the day, it is way better than a buggy app that crashes most of the time and is something I use most of the time. A must buy if you were to ask me. A word of warning, there’s also some lag in the data like the Bloomberg app.

Almost made the list – PSE Ticker

PSE Ticker iphone app pse stock investor trader

This is probably the best FREE app (Theoretically, you’ll find out why in the end) that you’ll ever find for PSE stock investing / trading, PSE Ticker has so many features that one cannot expect from a free app! They have the Ticker feature which is pretty cool (I haven’t checked if their data is up-to-the-minute), I don’t really like looking at tickers (it tempts me lol!) so I don’t use it much. They also have stock information, portfolio, market index, foreign exchange information, but here’s the coolest part, for technical analysts, you can see the charts with all the information like MACD, RSI etc. However, here’s where FREE apps suck, it’s full of bugs! Some stock information you can’t see, you also find that charts are limited to what is already on your screen and the app crashes most of the time. Maybe the developer could ask people to pay and fix it up…

Some unmentioned PSE apps

There are also 2 more apps that I haven’t included as I haven’t used it personally, but these are Technistocks and Candle Sticks. With Technistocks, I believe you have to be a paying subscriber to be able to use their app (it requires username and password). While Candle sticks is good for technical analysis, as they do charting with all the technical information you’ll need so you can analyze on the go.

Anymore iPhone apps for PSE stock trader / investor that I haven’t added?

I was invited to one of the tech events, and this was one of the first events that I didn’t know what the event was for (or it did sound like it’s too good to be true). This event was the launching of iZone iHub, an event where techies can meet and collaborate on different internet projects. Why is it the place to be for Technopreneurs you ask, well read on and you’ll find out.

izone ihub

It is a big office (with workstations, bean bags and free coffee or tea) situated in a penthouse in a prestigious Ortigas address, and at first seemed like a normal office space (except it was setup for party for the launching night). There were plenty of people in the room, all that seemed to have come from a techy background (not the looks but I knew that from the invite lol). Then I was surprised when their Chairman arrived, Mr. Daniel Pena. You can read more about his numerous success in a lot of fields here, an amazing story if you ask me.

iZone iHub – Collaborate, Get an Investor, and Free Office!

Daniel Pena (Dan Pena) started to explain what iZone iHub is all about, it is a place where technopreneurs can come and work on their own projects for FREE (you heard that right, that’s YOUR own project). You can come to their office and work there, it’s open 24/7 so you can come anytime of the day. Anyone is welcome to come, except that the condition is that you work on your projects (not for facebook and definitely not porn!). As they say nothing is FREE, so what’s the catch? Dan Pena said there’s none, but he went on to explain that he wanted to give back to the community and that his firm would like to produce great internet projects that they could invest on (as long as you got a great project that is profitable). As a matter of fact, he can even become your investor for the project, aside from the funding and resources he’ll provide, what’s really valuable here is his experience and network which would surely bring any startup up the limelight. So a place to work and a very experienced investor (who’s done it all and earned millions doing it) waiting to help your project, common guys, you really got to be there.

But that’s not all, here’s the really cool part about iZone iHub, aside from getting the free office space and an investor for your project. iZone iHub is also a place to find co-founders to your startup! So if you’re looking for willing techy partners, this might be the place. They have billboards where they post about iZone iHub people and their skills.

If you wish to visit iZone iHub, their address is located at Unit No.12 A ( Penthouse )  Agustin 1 Building, No. 28 F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Ortigas Business Center Pasig City 1605. You can also visit their website here.

So who wants to collaborate on a new project at iZone iHub?
