One of the coolest things I found out was about Cashsense, I was invited to their prelaunch event (a while back). And now they’re back with bigger and better plans which I believe is really beneficial to people who send remittances to the Philippines. So here’s all about Cashsense Remittances Philippines…

Most of us here are afraid of transacting online, afraid that we might get hacked and all our money will be gone thus stopping online buyers from buying. Here’s something like a prepaid credit card, move all your funds somewhere and use it to buy stuff online. This way you can limit risks and get the stuff you want delivered to your doorstep!

I like what Cashsense is doing, not only are they helping our fellow OFWs abroad in sending their hard earned money to their families. But also helping local businesses into more advanced way of shopping for our people and promotes more online purchases.

I’ve noticed that in every country, there are different ways of how businesses market to bloggers. I’m both a Blogger and a Businessman, which puts me in a good position to understand how both can reach a middle ground when it comes to marketing to the Bloggers. What you need to know about Bloggers in the Philippines:

Bloggers have Reputation and Credibility

Most of the bloggers blog with their name on the line, some maybe hiding under a nickname or blog-name but once you go to their about page or look at their pictures, you’ll know who they are. Bloggers put their reputation on the line, so they make their own rules and guidelines on how and what to blog about. Bloggers write on their experiences, whether good or bad.

Blogger’s Time is Scarce

Bloggers have full-time Jobs, Businesses, Friends and Families, so our time can really become scarce, not to mention the number of events of businesses that invite bloggers to go everyday. So businesses should understand that bloggers need to be invited at least 1 month early and reminders as the event closes in. Bloggers might decline invitations but it doesn’t mean they disrespect or belittle your business but more about prior commitments or just needing to rest.

Blogging is a Hobby that can be a Job or can only stay as a Hobby

To most bloggers, blogging is simply a hobby or interest that they have and something they’d like to share with the world. Some bloggers make money with their blogs, but the majority don’t, bloggers don’t blog for just the money, bloggers do it because they love it. So do think of bloggers as your influential consumers, we blog for the love of sharing, anything extra is a plus.

Press releases are not enough

Sending out press releases for the interested bloggers would definitely be great but it is not enough. Whatever your press releases are, it might be interesting news but most bloggers are not newscasters, bloggers blog about their own experiences so how do you expect a blogger to write something they’re not familiar with or something they’re not sure of.

Experience is the key

Allow bloggers to try, whether you give or lend them your product or service. Bloggers need to experience for themselves how it really is, and that will make the post more effective to their readers (it is usually supported with pictures). Bloggers have their own opinions, and experiencing it could really make the difference for readers to believe about what the blogger just blogged. If you really believe in your products/services, then allow bloggers to review it honestly.

Feedback

Bloggers give good and bad feedback just like normal consumers, difference is that their opinions are voiced out publicly and is seen by the public. When you do want to deal with bloggers, do accept the good feedback, as well as, the bad feedback. The best solutions to address the feedback is by leaving comments under the post. If the feedback was bad, then do address their concern on the bottom and do say how you’re looking to improve it. This way, whoever’s reading it would be aware on the businesses’ end and would take the judgement more lightly.

I guess, when I started doing an online business, even though I did not admit, I somehow feel that I went into the online business for the promise of fast money and residual income (it felt like easy money). Time passed by, earnings didn’t really go too high, it’s probably good enough for a salary for one man and never enough to go beyond that. It took more time than ever yet rewarded me just a little higher each day.

When I left the online business, I somehow felt like an addict, constantly needing to go and check what goes on online. Thinking about what could be done and if there are anything new out there. But, as I got away from the net, I got to see the real business (tangible and simple). The problem I saw with online businesses is that business models are somehow complicated (freemium, subscription, advertising etc.), it’s not only one model but multiple ones to really squeeze the money out of it (some concepts do and some don’t). Unlike the offline business, where the businesses are more simple, buy or manufacture low and sell high and with volume. But it might just be me, maybe I was made to love websites but not really make a living out of it.

I was able to go around, see how people do their business and learned from them. I just realized that they earn so much more doing what they do and in a much simpler way (than figuring out how to code a feature for a website). The downside is, of course, the physical side, where you constantly walk around move and stand like you never did in the office. It more tiring and challenging (thinking while you’re tired) but the rewards and the feeling of success is much more felt.

I realized that maybe I’ve approached my online businesses wrongly before, for you to compete with facebook, you don’t just make a website just like theirs with all the same features, it is the people (the company staff) that supports and runs its day to day, the servers that allows us all to connect simultaneously, and the money they spent for marketing their website. These are the things that I was not able to see, and felt that if I could do better means everyone will switch to me, but it’s never like that, it’s a lot of factors that make up success for websites and not just one. There’s only a few online businesses that can stand on their own, most rely on offline brick and mortars to make their money (e.g. advertising from companies, selling products etc.). Most online businesses were built to support or to increase sales of an offline business, the online still needs the offline to earn money.

I must say it might take a while for me again to get back to online businesses, I only keep one running which is WhenInManila. The rest are left alone for some small residual monthly income. I’m starting to enjoy doing and learning more about offline business, just like Warren Buffet’s principles, I’m choosing simple and non high tech and focus on building and improving my processes and people to make a big business. I’ll be continuing posting my explorations here, and I hope to have helped people transition to other businesses. There’s more money after the net.

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately and one thing that I found success in was when I started making minisites and thought of expanding into many different websites which I felt was lucrative. But, as I look back, I should’ve seen the bigger picture, that it’s really bound to go down the waste and here’s the reasons why minisites or owning many websites are bound to fail:

SEO work

The number one reason for me is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). We always believe that whatever we do will become successful (otherwise we wouldn’t have done it), and we feel that we’ll have everyone’s support somewhere along the way. But it doesn’t work that way, you have one unique website, tomorrow, you’ll probably have hundreds or millions of clones (Friendster vs. Facebook etc.). Today, you could be the top of the search results for a certain topic and tomorrow, you could be at the bottom. I had success with my minisites and some of my websites for quite some time but, along the way, competitors worked harder (they got more backlinks, they got more articles, they became better). My websites were pushed back and I saw it all go to the 3rd page when I stopped working on SEO for less than a month. These days, everyone knows SEO, there are books and so many resources that is all about it. You slack off one bit, your competitor overtakes you by a good number of positions. That’s how stiff competitions are especially now that people are looking at niches (less and less opportunities).

Focus on improvements

Once you were to get traffic and followers, the problem is when you have plenty of minisites and websites, you’re time to improve and develop the sites are less (as your time is distributed amongst plenty sites). It’s really easy to copy a website, but to make it better than the rest is another question, you need time and deep focus to make it extremely better for users to appreciate. But, in my case, I remembered the difficulty I had was looking at what types of websites was going to be successful, it was difficult to say therefore what I did was to spread things around and see where I can be successful but didn’t work out that way. In the end, when my focus was there, I realized that I might be undervaluing what my skills can do and how much I should be able to earn, so I decided to move my focus elsewhere (offline businesses).

Traffic is everything

Traffic is really everything, you need to really focus on that. Study your Analytics very well as they are your best friend and your weapon to become better. But traffic doesn’t come cheap, it comes at a high cost of developing your website, making users happy with your website and investing in many SEO campaigns. Without traffic, your website is nothing; no advertisers would even look at your website.

Put your eggs in one bigger basket and keep adding more eggs until…

I know that the saying usually goes “do not put all your eggs in one basket”, but, in this case, I would say otherwise. By putting more eggs in one bigger basket, you get to focus on just one basket and monitor your eggs better. Same goes for websites, focus and build in it, just look at Amazon, Facebook, Twitter etc., they focused on one website and made it successful. If you feel that you can handle more then you can add more websites, focus on one and make it successful before you move on to another.

Reflecting back is what I do right now to really understand and keep all my learnings in me right now. I’d like to apply what I learned to the businesses that I would do in the future. It would be nice to hear what you’re lessons are in doing online businesses.

The hardest part for an internet entrepreneur is to finally admit that on line earning money is not working, to finally man up and move on. I am at this stage in my quest to on line earning money, this is where I put my internet websites and projects on the side (part time) and look at reality on other businesses that I could do that could reward me better.

Before I graduated in University, all I ever wanted to do was to be an internet entrepreneur. I had a lot of knowledge about it and worked really hard to strive further. I realized that I wasn’t a programmer nor was I a designer, I felt I was more of an analyst (I learned to program and to design as I went along). As I was still a student, I always followed tech news and enjoyed every bit studying the numbers and facts that they all have to offer (exactly why I started this blog). I went to exhibits, conferences and seminars hoping to meet the successful internet entrepreneurs so I could get a tip or two or to have them invest in my startup (this was the most difficult part of it, I was laughed at and insulted by some high up management people).

If it’s too good to be true, it probably is!

As I went back home (in the Philippines), I somehow felt like the internet was open. Only a few dominated certain fields of business and a lot more fields were open for my taking. I was young, I was foolish and I was arrogant, I felt that I could make it here back home. But at the back of my head, one question lurked, why is it that no one started internet businesses here? I thought it could be the lack of knowledge of people or the lack of real training in school that closed the eyes of many people (heck we got 90 million population back then and internet was just starting to grow). So I started my own internet company, hiring people without really knowing how to make a website or how to program (I just knew basic html back then).

Sometimes we can’t defy the norm, there are reasons for it.

My staff all suggested to go and earn from outsourcing projects, but I resisted, I wanted to on line earning money by means of making my own websites. I felt that I don’t want to work for others who’d be ordering me around to tell me to change all sorts of details on their websites but, nonetheless, I still tried. Outsourcing didn’t work out for me, I did have plenty of clients but our websites were really poor quality and I was embarrassed to deliver it. I felt that it had to feel web 2.0 but I may have under delivered. So I stopped and changed my direction, from now on, I’ll focus on my own websites.

Not because someone big is backing something means it’s successful or can become successful.

I got excited and learned a lot about domain names, I felt that it was real estate heaven (especially .PH). Since I felt internet businesses would be big one day I wanted to be the first on it (just like how certain .COMs were commanding millions of dollars). I heard Rick Latona (one of the most popular domain name investors) has invested and I wanted a piece of the action too so I went along with it. .PH looked really promising back then, no one investing on one keyword domain, it just felt like people didn’t know how to value internet domains yet, I felt I was ahead than everyone else. So I went ahead and registered about a hundred domains, it was a bit too much to pay but I thought I could earn from it or sell it on to someone later. But as time went by, I never saw .PH improving, I saw people letting certain great one word domain expire just to be picked up by other cyber squatters. So I decided to monetize it, I did it by making a minisite for each of them. Making websites from wordpress and writing few articles for it.

Go Big or Go Home.

The minisites ranked really well, there were plenty of visitors (I didn’t have much competition locally). But as I only can use PPC ads to on line earning money locally, I was only getting $0.02 per click! I would look at the stats and see that I did well on clicks but payouts were as small as $1. I was mad about it, I felt that this shouldn’t be the case but that’s reality. The one that struck me was when I heard that Rick Latona had made all of his domains expire, around 1200 domains. I just felt there might just be no hope in holding on to them except if I register and build real website projects.

Focus Focus Focus

The worse thing about Internet businesses is that it’s easy to make a website, when you feel bored on something you’d automatically move on to the next project and to the next. What I forgot was to improve my current website, make it better and more fitting for users. What I did was to build and leave it to run on it’s own (with 100 domains, it’s pretty easy to do this). I lacked focus, I always thought of what excited me, but didn’t think about what could make it work. I should’ve developed just one website and made significant improvements over time rather than owning tons of websites that doesn’t give much value or nobody appreciates.

Don’t fall inlove with your Investments

Next thing I did, was to drop more than 100 domains, each one hurt like hell as I invested money but I do have to trim down and develop a selected few for my projects. When I cut down, I felt great, more time less projects (minisites did take some time to complete). I started developing websites like Lot.ph, Equipment.ph, etc., some that made me feel that people would need. At first it was great, and as a year went pass I earned quite a bit to float my company and to make some profit. It was great back then but then when I reassessed myself after a year, the question I asked myself was is this all the earnings I get after all the hours I put into developing and designing? I really love what I do but if I can’t pay myself enough, should I continue? How will I have a future like have a family and kids of my own? My earnings will never be enough.

Time Vs. Money Made

I then looked at myself and reflected (it took me a long while to reflect, a really long while), battling whether I should proceed or should I stop now. One one hand, I feel I found a good formula to on line earning money from, but on the other hand, the earnings were dependent on Google Adsense which fluctuated a lot (some clicks pay as high as $5 but some as low as $0.02). I started looking around businesses and studied their financial statement and business models, and that’s when I saw that I may have been blinded by my passion and love for what I do to the earnings that I get.

Success Stories are there but not everyone becomes successful

Don’t get me wrong, I won’t sell my soul for money and but later on, I knew my passion was more on how I can be a successful entrepreneur. I found a hole, I tried to exploit it but it didn’t workout and now I feel I have to move on. This doesn’t mean that I leave everything behind, but what happens is that my internet ventures become a side job and my focus will be to build better businesses. However this doesn’t mean that one cannot on line earning money (There are lots of success stories out there), but this means that maybe I’m not built for it and this should be as a hobby for me.

Offline Entrepreneurship is similar as Online Entrepreneurship

I remembered Warren Buffet said that he never invested in High Tech businesses because he never understood it. Well, I never understood how I can really make money out of it. Everyday, I think of ways, thinking how this will work and how that will work but none paying me for me to say it’s enough. Today, I raise my white flag and surrender to making my internet business full time, maybe it was meant as a part time business for me, to enjoy and spend my spare time on. The lessons I’ve learned and the problems I was able to solve has truly helped me mature a lot as an Entrepreneur, building businesses is what I enjoy and internet was a cheap means to doing so. The principles of doing an online business is pretty much the same offline, I learned that I could do better with an offline non high tech business right now. I somehow feel that this is a success and not a failure, I can finally move forward not thinking or regretting what I could’ve been if I tried. It’s time now to make bigger and real money with the time I spend in other methods, but somehow something inside me hopes that one day I can return to this field and be able to start a better equipped internet business venture. My dream is to be a serial entrepreneur and that’s where I’ll put my focus on.

It’s one of the most controversial question that a lot of people are asking, Can we Earn Money Online? Most of what we see online will tell you how easy it is to do so, some would even promise to deliver earnings fast and earn 6 figures a month! But is it true? Can we actually earn money online? Here’s my experience…

I always believed that money can be earned online, but it’s not like what everyone said it would be. It’s not overnight! Some systems that promote that the author has made thousands or millions is probably true, but with them telling everyone about it, people earn less or nothing at all.

My journey in earning money online started with a fascination with the internet and websites, then progressing into domaining and minisites and then soon developing more advanced WordPress websites that have used WordPress as a CMS (e.g. Classifieds, Submission sites, etc.). I have briefly touched on affiliate marketing and found that it really wasn’t for me so I really focused on building websites. Today, my way of earning money online is by making a website popular whether it is a blog or a 2.0 site and earn by traffic.

I ended up relying much on Google Adsense on delivering earnings, I’ve learned that certain keywords commanded a high value per click while some wasn’t worth having. Today, I don’t earn as much as gurus would claim online, I make enough to profit a little by my operation costs (staff, utilities etc.).

So do I believe that we can earn money online?

Yes, I do, it’s about looking for a new topic or type of website that can get lots of traffic. I realized that one of the biggest mistake I did was I lacked focus, I was so eager to develop and keep developing new ones which I could’ve just focused on a few and built them up (my target was 100 minisites which was nuts). Money can always be made online, we just have to open our eyes and ears for opportunities just like in other jobs. No money can be made overnight online (no matter how fast it would look), just like any other business it’ll take time to make a good amount.

Maybe in my quest, I still haven’t found the right mix but I still have earned a good amount. However, the earnings is not enough for me, so I would have to put all my interest on the internet to more of a part time thing. I believe that I can earn more doing different things than to keep going with my exploration. I hope that one day I could find that big break but, until then, everything else would have to move aside and adjust to my main work schedule. This is not the end of me and earning money online, this is still my hobby and what I truly enjoy, I would continue doing it for fun and interest and earn a little on the side.  But as Steve Jobs have said stay hungry and stay foolish, and that’s what I’ll keep doing =)

Ad placements

I’ve started to play around with ad placements a lot, I’ve always placed image / text ads and link ads on every website. The difference this time is that I started playing around placed bigger ads on the left hand side which is more noticeable and is easily click-able. What I did was that I’ve placed a 728×60 ad in the middle of the header and the main content of the website and added ads within the post. I also added link ads which blended well with the post and background of the website (Google Link ads placement post). Always try to play around with ad placement and learn the best spots for your ads.

Quality over Quantity

I specifically remembered that Google was all about quality right? So I thought how do I improve my Google adsenses statistics? If I lower the number of ads that I display and stuck to some just those ads with high CTR then I could earn more (Lower total pageviews with higher clicks). I could be right on this one, I dropped a lot of websites that didn’t earn much and removed some ads that didn’t convert. My stats started to look better and I noticed that clicks were somehow paid a little more! I somehow believe that Google is always about quality and this is definitely a way to embetter your website (from Google) and receive higher payouts per click in return.

SEO

I started paying more attention to SEO, I started to work on link building a lot and started to see little returns on this method. I’m not the best in SEO and it’s a tough job but it should pay with better traffic. I also bought a software called scrapebox which auto comments on different blogs / sites and can give you a huge number of link back in a short span of time. I also started to acquire services of some companies that do back linking services from web 2.0 websites, which in time would push the rankings even higher. I only tested these methods for certain websites and just started to see small returns, but, as it grows, I sure hope that it’ll give me more traffic.

Traffic Sharing websites

I noticed a lot of websites don’t really rely on Search Engines from traffic, so I started to research and thought where they got traffic from. I noticed there were a lot of websites that offered traffic sharing, the ones that looks like related posts in the blog but with interesting and catchy headlines. I joined several networks but I only found one that is good, it’s called Zaparena. How it works is you first add the ads that they have, after getting 20 visitors to them, you start posting your own ads and it will be displayed all over their network, you get around 200% traffic in return for each click that you send them. I noticed a lot of websites using them and they’ve been really profitable and with a high rank with huge traffic.

Economy

This is probably not my doing, but I do have to note that it was also probably as the world gets back to its feet after the recession and starts advertising again. More and more advertisers mean more competition, higher rate per click and more earnings for us publishers.

I’ve been so happy that I’ve finally started to see success and started to float my company, it’s been a hell of a ride but I’m happy that it’s somehow paying off (though not a lot). I requires very minimal time spent on sites and it returns really handsomely. I hope it continues to increase as time goes by, I’m very pleased with it right now.

Making money online has been a rough ride for me. I went from web developer to blogger, to domainer, to affiliate marketer, I wasn’t able to find the right mix until today. I started with minisites and then started to expand it into blogsites to bring more value to readers. And now I found that I made the right move. My earnings quadrupled this 2011 and I feel like I’ve finally reached a break through.

Here’s what I did to with my blogsites to money make online:

• Ask Others for advice – When in doubt, ask! Bloggers are really friendly, they help anyone (I really mean anyone). Contact them and ask them for advice, I’ve learned so much by talking to them. They were able to point me to the right direction, give motivation and pinpoint tasks that I haven’t been doing right.
• Great site – I started dropping a lot of domains and websites, I felt like I wasted my time and doesn’t really give me anything at all. So cut down the portfolio, focused on the ones that worked and concentrate to those selected with potential blog sites.
• Forget about money make online – One thing I started focusing on was CTRs, but one thing I forgot was that it was the CTR of a few thousand (which can mean that my ads might not be wrong but it probably was because there’s not enough traffic to get a good statistic). Focus on getting traffic to your blogsites, focusing on SEO (internal and external), targeting keywords and link building.

Occasionally, I do small projects that inspire me but one thing is for sure now, my focus is blog sites. Focusing most of my time and money in it is what I’m going to do, hopefully I’ll reach the $100 / day mark soon.
