The domain name extension, .MOBI, is a popular extension for mobile phones. It is popular as it was promoted by Nokia and is known to provide a better looking website in our phones that surf the web. So why would the advancement of phones hurt .MOBI? The reason’s simple…
… .MOBI costs $7.99 in GoDaddy each year. With almost everyone having a mobile phone, 3G and WIFI is now almost a standard feature for phones that are coming out. So that’s definitely good news for people who’ve invested in it, more traffic means more revenues and more value. But why the hell did I say it’s going to down?
Look at the new phones today and the features that it has, most are finally supporting to view webpages just like how you would view it on your monitor. Would I still search for a mobile version? No way, I’d rather stick to the full version and look at it the way I do with my computer. So you thought faster 3G’s going to save you, bad news, it’s just going to make you sink further. As 3G becomes faster (almost broadband speed) means I could load up a webpage in a few seconds, unlike some services today where you’d have to wait for a while so you’d find the less heavy mobile version. Check out the browsers for mobile as well, are they promoting the .MOBI? They’re literally allowing users to view the webpages fully so forget the mobile version I’ll go with the full page please.
– .MOBI’s downfall –
What you can do with your .MOBI is to resell them now or develop. While everyone is still in the .MOBI hype, sell it at a good price or risk its values falling. Or develop you .MOBI, dominate the mobile space with web apps for mobile. .MOBI will only survive with development and I don’t see much revenues otherwise. By the way, I’m not against .MOBI at all. Blogging about gadgets, particularly phones, made me see that manufacturers aren’t really supporting the .MOBI movement and is even trying to allow phones to view a webpage fully (see Palm Pixi).
