Everyone’s going Twitter crazy, as a matter of fact, Google has even tied up with Twitter to bring real time updates and news to Google’s search engine. As Twitter establishes itself as another internet powerhouse, are their URLs (http://Twitter.com/NAME) be valuable? I believe not…
… You’ve seen what GoDaddy does, when you check an availability of a domain it actually checks whether the twitter account name is available. If you also check DomainPigeon, you’ll also find that they’re not only displaying available domains but also Twitter URLs as well.
It is apparently against their terms of service for a user to sell their Twitter account. Today, they might allow certain transactions to happen as it gives them publicity, but sooner or later, as it becomes more rampant, don’t you think they’re going to stop it? I mean it could be their way of monetizing Twitter right? So they would simply shut your account down and that’s it all the Twitter URLs down the drain.
So how about those who own a good one dictionary word URL from WordPress.com or Blogger? Aren’t they supposed to be worth millions right now? Have they sold that much? No, right? Because it’s simply not yours, end of the day, if Twitter goes bankrupt or decides to shut their service, the URL goes down with it. It’s simply like Twitter lending it to you right now.
Twitter might soon rank well in Google but the point is that it still won’t be equal compared to a proper domain’s ranking. But as long as you’re in violation of their TOS and as long as you don’t “own†that Twitter URL then its simply not going to sell very high. There might be an odd one here and there but its not going to be that much higher than a domain.
